Joseph Ubbace Fires Complete Game and Drives in 3 Runs in 9-1 Win

The Hauppauge Eagles 14U took advantage of their extra opportunities with aggressive approaches at the plate. On Wednesday afternoon, the Eagles demonstrated relentless baserunning and late-game execution to break open a tight game. In the sixth frame, the Eagles scored 5 runs to fly past SBR-Select 14U by a score of 9-1.

For the first four innings, SBR-Select starting pitcher Noah Menscal did a solid job navigating traffic and keeping his club within striking distance. Happauge struck right away in the bottom of the first when catcher Brody Meyer came up with runners on second and third. Meyer ripped a line drive single to centerfield, bringing home Brady Anderson and Sonny Iovine to give the Eagles an early 2-0 lead.

Happauge tacked another run on in the first when Brody Meyer was balked in. A run scored in the second inning when Anthony Dolegiewicz hits a grounder to the shortstop to drive in Michael Salzillo.The Eagles increase the lead to 4-0.

Meanwhile, Joseph Innace was dynamic on the mound for the Eagles. The left-hander dedicated the tempo all afternoon, tossing six complete innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits. Pitching with poise and pounding the strike zone was how he was able to earn the win over SBR-Select.

SBR-Select managed to break through in the top of the sixth frame. Angel Reyes led off with a hit, and after Nick Noto walked, Drew Mazzola hit a groundout to advance both runners into scoring position with one out. SBR-Select then managed to push across a run during a wild double play sequence (1-3-2). A ground ball off the bat of Liam Basile, Reyes scored, but the Eagles recovered on a bullet from Sonny Iovine to Brody Meyer to cut down the runner at the plate, limiting the damage to just one run. The Eagles still had the lead 4-1.

That defensive play gave Hauppauge all the momentum they needed heading into the bottom of the sixth, where their lineup completely blew the game open, eventually resulting in a run rule.

Lead-off hitter Brady Anderson sparked the rally with a line drive double to center, followed immediately by a Sonny Iovine ground ball single to right and a walk to Brody Meyer to load the bases. Happauge showed great discipline and aggressiveness on the bases. The pitch hit Landon Kram to make it a 5-1 game. Joseph Innace hit a grounder to third base that induced an error, clearing the bases to extend the lead to 8-1. Following a walk to Michael Salzillo and a Jake Rosenthal hit by a pitch, James Lagatolla drew a patient bases-loaded walk to run-rule SBR-Select 9-1.

In the loss, Sean Wrona and Angel Reyes each had two singles. Jonathan Sapienza had one strong inning out of the pen for SBR Select, striking out the side. Both catchers showcased tremendous skills. Jackson Lenz for SBR secured two outs at the plate on wild pitches. While for the Eagles, Meyer threw out 2 runners: one who tried to steal second and one who was picked off of third.

With a dominant pitching performance from Innace and aggressive base running, Hauppauge Eagles 14U continues to be a contender as the postseason is right around the corner.
