Sunday Spotlight Powered by Lux Stone Group: Matt Kurz

(Editor’s Note: This is the first installment of a 10-part series in which we feature players that are performing exceptionally during the 2026 season. First up is Matt Kurz of Clarke HS.)

It was quite a week for Clarke senior Matt Kurz who fired a perfect game and also went 5-for-10 at the plate with 1 double, 1 homer, 5 runs scored, 5 RBIs and 3 SBs. On the season, Clarke is 12-1 overall (8-1 Nassau AA-III). Kurz is 5-1 with a 1.78 ERA and is batting .436 with 19 RBIs.

I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say…

Who are some people who have had a positive impact on your career?

I would definitely say my parents, they have always pushed me and given me what’s best for my career. I couldn’t thank them enough for all the support and guidance they have given me. Also my coaches, Coach Abruscato and Coach Joe Francisco, have guided and helped me through my time playing with them and have taught me skills and knowledge like no other.

Do you take private lessons from any instructors?

Yes, I take private hitting lessons with Joe Francisco. I have never taken a pitching lesson in my life.

Favorite player in Major League Baseball?

Mike Trout is definitely someone who I try to play like; his outfield play and his consistency at the plate is something I try to do every game.

How was your experience with the college recruiting process?

My college recruiting process was definitely long, I was not scouted by any colleges heavily until the end of my junior year of school. But in the summer they started to come to more games, and show more interest. Ultimately, Hofstra felt like home and I loved it the second I stepped on the campus for my visit and met with the staff. I am super excited to start next fall and see how I can improve and contribute to the team and the program. I did consider playing football for a little bit, and had some interest and visits but I knew in the end baseball is what I wanted to do.

What has been your most thrilling moment on a baseball field?

Although throwing a perfect game was awesome, it was not my most thrilling moment in my career. Winning counties in 2024 was by far my best sports moments in my career. That was an unreal experience with all of my brothers and we plan to do it again this year.

What did you work on this offseason?

I worked on getting stronger and being more consistent with my hitting. Being in the gym 5-6 times per week was huge for me coming into my senior year bigger and stronger. Also, hitting a lot has made my swing more comfortable and feel more confident in the box.

Best baseball trip you’ve been on?

The best baseball trip I’ve been on was Georgia. Playing at the East Cobb Complex was a fun experience.

How are you able to prepare for both baseball and football when both can be so time consuming?

Yeah I just focus on one sport at a time. When it’s football season I lock in and work on football and when it’s baseball season I only train and think about baseball.

What does it mean to you to represent Clarke?

It means a lot to represent Clarke baseball for the last 4 years and every moment has been special. This program has done so much for me and has taught me so much and words can’t describe what it means to wear Clarke on my chest.

Goal for the rest of 2026?

The goal is to win a state championship. There is no other goal. We set a standard every year and it is always to win the ultimate game.
