GAME RECAP: Mike Messina’s Arm, Guytano Kiesel’s Bat Lead Bayport-Blue Point to 20-0 Record

It doesn’t matter what level of baseball you are playing, it’s not supposed to be easy. To this point, Bayport-Blue Point has made it look relatively easy as they have rolled through League VII to the tune of a 20-0 record.

The Phantoms completed a sweep of Southampton with a 6-1 victory on Senior Day, behind a complete game gem by Mike Messina, who yielded five hits and struck out 10 batters.

The game was close through four innings of play. Southampton’s junior RHP Thomas Crawford held the potent Phantom’s lineup at bay early on.

The Phantoms first run came in the bottom of the second inning when Dylan Spano stepped to the plate with runners at 1st & 2nd with one out. He hit a grounder to short, Daniel McDonnell fielded it and stepped on the bag for the force but the throw to first got away and allowed Brady Gelling to score, who drew a one-out walk to get the inning started.

The Mariners were able to get on the board in the top of the third inning. After the leadoff batter struck out, Lucas Magnozzi walked and was sacrificed to second by Elijah Abella. Dan McDonnell came through with an RBI single to left center to score Magnozzi.

That was all that Messina permitted on this afternoon. The tie was broke in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Phantoms broke through with 3 runs. Tyler McKillop started the rally with a leadoff walk and he came around to score on an RBI double to deep left center by Sam Devore. After Cooper Fuller drew a walk and Devore stole third, he scored on a sac fly by Guytano Kiesel. They added another run on an E5.

With the game essentially in hand, Kiesel added some insurance runs on a two-run double to center field.

Messina was in cruise control mode and retired the final 4 batters after issuing a two-out walk in the sixth.

With the victory, BBP concludes their league play with 20 straight wins. They’ll have a bye week before the playoffs begin – with their sights set on capturing their first County Championship since 2015.
