by Ryan Manno Opening weekend continued across the Northeast and beyond on Saturday, February 14, as regional programs faced challenging early season competition in non-conference play. Several teams played doubleheaders as part of southern road trips, while others continued long opening series against ranked opponents. Division-I: Fordham University at New Mexico Game One: New Mexico 18, Fordham 8 Game Two: New Mexico 16, Fordham 6 Fordham dropped both games of its doubleheader against New Mexico in Albuquerque, falling 18-8 in the opener before a 16-6 loss in game two. In the first game, Fordham struck first on an RBI single from shortstop Anthony Grabau, but New Mexico responded immediately with three runs of its own. By Anthony DiCocco Friday marked the start of the 2026 college baseball season. Let’s see how these six local squads fared on the NCAA’s Opening Day. Division I: St. John’s 3, Ball State 4 The Red Storm broke through against Keegan Johnson in the top of the third inning. Following a leadoff walk by Dylan Fitzimmons, Jon LeGrande blasted a two-run homer to right field. Ball State immediately cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame. Gavin Balius was hit by a pitch before stealing second base, allowing Kenskey Thomas to drive him in with a single. St. John’s tacked on another run during the top of the fourth.
