Looking out from the bleachers standing behind home plate you’ll see one of two things. One may be the Massapequa water tower looming over the neighborhood and trees, on the other side, you’ll see pennants all over the school buildings. Those pennants represent Massapequa High Scho...

After a loss to Port Washington in the 2024 Nassau County Class AAA semifinals ended Massapequa’s six-year run of county championships, the Chiefs returned to the mountaintop Sunday morning, routing top-seeded and reigning champion Farmingdale, 12-0, in game three of the best-of-three championship series. Massapequa rallied after dropping the opener 1-0 in eight innings due to a balk-off. After bein...

In the first year under the new classification, Massapequa shockingly was defeated by Port Washington in the best-of-three AAA semifinals. Massapequa ...
ERIK PAULSEN JR WALK-OFF GRAND SLAM TO WIN IT FOR MASSAPEQUA!! ARE YOU KIDDING?! pic.twitter.com/XxVwkXrBMY — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 31, 2023 Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s season preview series. You couldn’t have scripted it up any better. Bases loaded, two outs, County Championship on the line. Erik Paulsen Jr up to the plate. Paulsen hit a majestic, sky-scraping walk-off grand slam that sent the Massapequa faithful into an absolute state of euphoria. He floated around the bases and the Chiefs had erased an early 6-1 lead after 3 innings in Game 3 of the Nassau Class AA Finals against No. 2 Plainview JFK. They captured their unprecedented sixth straight County Championship. “That’s definitely in my top...
Among the most common questions I hear on ballfields is, “how is Massapequa always so good?” It’s a great question. Longtime head coach Tom Sheedy gave a brief window into how they operate when he said, “I learned from the old Ward Melville lacrosse coach who told me about the ‘cycle’. The cycle is when you have grade school kids that come down to your camps, they wind up being the leaders of your varsity team, then they go on to play in college, then they come back to help out at the camps and the cycle goes on. It’s a very positive thing,” he said. It may sound oversimplified, but one thing is certain – Massapequa is at the top of the hierarchy of Long Island baseball programs. They are the five-time reigning Class AA Nassau County Ch...
Matt Minio fires a complete game gem – Massapequa shuts out Plainview JFK 3-0 to capture the Nassau I Championship ! They will face the winner of Commack-Sachem East in the Long Island Championship on Sunday pic.twitter.com/jzh9xlLFC4 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 17, 2021 It’s been mentioned ad nauseum but the cancellation of the 2020 high school season impacted teams in many ways. Obviously, the teams that were loaded with seniors and were hungry for a championship felt the most spurned. At the very top of that list is Massapequa who had already been riding a stretch of back-to-back-to-back Long Island Championships. Fast forward to today – and while that streak was ended by Commack last June, they did win their fourth consecutive Nassau County title. The ...
MASSAPEQUA HAS DONE IT! They are the back-to-back-to-back Nassau County Class AA Champs!!! FINAL: Massapequa 8 Port Washington 6 pic.twitter.com/vCR8ZkeiCe — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 1, 2019 How unique is 2021? Massapequa – the three-time reigning Long Island Champs open up their season tomorrow against Port Washington and they don’t even have their final cuts made. That’s right, the team coached by one of the greatest coaches in Long Island history will take the field on Tuesday but won’t have their final roster until Thursday. And it’s totally plausible. Championships are the norm at Massapequa. They captured the previous three Class AA Long Island Championships before the shutdown in 2020 and Coach Tom Sheedy said 2020 was the best team of ...
Photo Credit: Baseball Player Magazine Two consecutive years the Massapequa Chiefs were on the verge of capturing the Long Island Championship. Each time they came tantalizing short. “We had runners on second and third with a good hitter at the plate,” said Head Coach Tom Sheedy. “We thought we would win, but it didn’t work out. That’s baseball,” he added. “West Islip is a fundamentally sound team, they made no mistakes. They had a great pitcher on the mound and so did we,” he added. That great pitcher the Chiefs had on the mound, Alex Cosenza, was an All-County pitcher. He went on to graduate and is now playing at Hofstra University, like many of their best players from 2014. In total, the Chiefs lost eight of their starters from last year a...
