By Tucker Terranova Suffolk County’s baseball elite took center stage last night as the Suffolk County Baseball Coaches Association (SCBCA) hosted its annual awards banquet, celebrating the top players, coaches, and performances from the spring season. The evening’s spotlight shone brightest on the county’s three most prestigious honors: the Carl Yastrzemski Award, recognizing Suffolk’s Most Valuable Player; the Blue Chip Silver Slugger Award, presented to the county’s top hitter; and the Paul Gibson Award, honoring Suffolk’s most dominant pitcher. Carl Yastrzemski Award – Jayden Stroman, RHP/CF, Patchogue-Medford Jayden Stroman, a dynamic two-way senior and the younger brother of Yankees pitcher Marcus Stroman, became the 57th recipient of the Carl Yastrzemski Award. Garden City Captures Class AA Long Island Championship with 10-5 Win Over East Islip

by Tucker Terranova Jack Murphy discusses his base-clearing triple which gave Garden City a lead they wouldn’t relinquish, as well as what was working for his squad today and what an LIC means for the program. pic.twitter.com/zMzYcQoMhC — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 5, 2025 The typical approach against a sub-1.00 ERA Division-I arm? Scratch out a run or two and lean on your pitching to do the rest. Garden City had other plans. Facing League IV MVP Thomas Costarelli and the top statistical pitching staff on Long Island, the Trojans erupted for nine runs across the fourth and fifth innings, storming past Suffolk Class AA champion East Islip, 10-5, to capture the Class AA Long Island Championship Thursday at Farmingdale State College. The win delivered Garden City its first LIC ...

GAME RECAP: East Islip Captures Suffolk Class A Championship Over East Hampton

East Islip LHP Lucas Patton fires a complete game 2-hit shutout against East Hampton to capture the Suffolk Class AA Championship! 🏆 They will face Garden City in the Long Island Championship on Thursday at Farmingdale State College pic.twitter.com/ch6RRKlVVK — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 31, 2025 Statistically speaking, once East Islip scores 1 run, the game is over. The Redmen’s historically dominant pitching staff entered Saturday’s County Finals allowing less than one run per game and recorded 10 shutouts on the season. Once Mike Tramaglini hit a two-run single through the middle in the bottom of the first, the game was pretty much decided. They sent junior LHP Lucas Patton to the mound, who entered with a 0.50 ERA. The southpaw, who relies on craft and not ove...

Sunday Spotlight: Thomas Costarelli

Back in 2021, East Islip captured the Conference IV Long Island Championship with a convincing 14-2 win over the Nassau Champions, Bethpage, at Mitchel Field. While the Long Island baseball community saw that up close, there was another dominant team that quietly dominated on the same field. It was East Islip’s JV team who posted an undefeated record (18-0). The bulk of that team was comprise of not 10th graders, or even 9th graders, but 8th grader. In fact, had the 2020 season not been cancelled, they would’ve been called up as 7th graders. That core group of players, Thomas Costarelli, Alex Ciampi, Chris LaMacchia, Jaden Schmidt, Billy Mahoney and John Talt, are now anchoring the latest iteration of East Islip varsity baseball. They enter Monday’s Suffolk AA playoff mat...

On the Back of a Deep Pitching Staff, East Islip Aspires to Claim Championship

Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s series by George Caratzas Coming off a regular season that saw the East Islip Redmen go 13-5 in league play, before eventually losing in the playoffs, head coach Sal Ciampi Jr. has much of his dominant pitching core returning for 2025.  In 2024, the Redmen were carried by their pitching staff, having five pitchers with earned run averages under three. Of their five regular-season losses, four of them were by one run or were games that were decided in the final at bat. This year, all five of East Islip’s big arms are back as they look to claim a championship.  “It was disappointing from the standpoint of it ending where it ended,” Ciampi said in an interview with Axcess Baseball. “But, we set ourselves up to b...

And for the East Islip Redmen, the future is now. Despite only having two seniors on their roster last season, head coach Sal Ciampi was encouraged by the team’s season last year, as well as the progress he saw in many of his younger players. “Last year went pretty good.” Ciampi said. “We were a very young team. Offense Powers East Islip Over the Top Against Hauppauge

by Andy Smith East Islip 11 Hauppauge 6 WP Nick Rizzo Veltman and Kneisel both had 3RBIs for East Islip pic.twitter.com/vbD8CTeub5 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 1, 2023 It was a cold, windy day but the offenses were hot and tallied a combined seventeen runs by a score of 11-6 with East Islip as the victor. The Eagles got to Nick Rizzo in the first inning and scored three runs off a two-run triple by first baseman Mike Oliveto, who was able to round home plate off a throwing error.  The Redmen responded in the bottom half of the frame by putting up four runs to give them a one-run lead. Left fielder Thomas Costarelli got things started with a lead-off single. Then, Alex Johnston reached first, which was followed by a base on balls to Rizzo which loaded the bases. Then following...
