It was Good Friday for those who celebrate, but it was also a really good friday for Stony Brook, who kept their win streak going, LIU and USMMA on an exceptionally cold April day in the northeast. Here’s how it went down: Division-I Stony Brook stayed red-hot with a double header sweep over Hartford. In Game 1, Sam Turcotte started and earned the win. Hartford was able to get out to an early 2-0 lead in the first on a sac fly and an RBI ground out to second. He settled in after that and was lights-out moving forward. He went the complete seven innings, allowing just 2 runs (1 ER), allowing five hits and striking out six. Shane Paradine hit a sac fly to score Evan Giordano in the third inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. In the fourth inning, a bases loaded walk by Evan Giordano tied t...
Yesterday was the warmest day of the year, with some parts of New York touching 80 degrees. It was a summer day with not a cloud in the sky and yet there was only three local teams in action. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: Stony Brook beat Albany in an absolute thriller, 14-11, in Albany in a game that took three hours, 30 minutes. Shane Paradine notched the go-ahead two-run double in the 9th inning to give the Seawolves a 13-11 lead, which they would hold on to. They actually led by 5 runs at two separate times. They led 6-1 in the fifth and 9-4 in the sixth following a solo shot by John Tuccillo. The problem was that the Great Danes offense was just getting going. They put up three runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth with the game-tying run coming on a sac fly by ...
Well, we waited long enough to kick off the Power Rankings season. But, there really was no choice since LIU didn’t open up until this past week. Now that everyone is in action, it’s only right for the first edition. We will just stick to Division-I schools, since Queens hasn’t started so I can’t really analyze them yet and none of the Division-III schools have begun. Without further ado, here’s how the local schools stack up. 1.Fordham (Record: 7-1, Trending UP) The Rams won two of three from Farleigh-Dickinson this weekend, and the loss was a 16-inning marathon that happened to be the second longest game in school history! On Friday, they combined to throw a 1-hit shutout in a 9-0 win with Matt Mikulski showing why he’s one of the top southpaws around....
Yesterday was a record-breaking way for one local program – who couldn’t stop scoring runs. Another team set a record for a marathon day while another had their game cancelled due to COVID protocols. Welcome to life in 2021. Here’s how the action went down: Division-I Hofstra split a double header with Sacred Heart, but we are going to focus on Game 2 because it was the record-breaking performance. They posted a remarkable 27 runs in that one. They scored in every inning, here’s their breakdown of runs in each inning 1 1 6 5 7 4 2 1 X They amassed 24 hits and drew 12 walks. Here’s their top performers Ryan Morash: 4-for-6, 4 runs, 2 RBI Anthony D’Onofrio: 3-for-5, 3 runs, 5 RBI Austin Gauthier: 3-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBI Nick Marrero: 3-for-3, 4 runs, 4 RBI,...
Well, it’s not quite Yankees vs Red Sox, but two teams that do not like to lose to each other are Fordham and Stony Brook. Two of the top Division-I programs in the northeast battled it out yesterday for the first time since March 13, 2016. For much of the rivalry, Stony Brook has dominated – the Seawolves have an all-time record of 17-5 against NCAA’s winningest program. For much of yesterday, it appeared that the Seawolves would do more of the same. They had a 7-2 lead in the top of the seventh, well on their way to a victory. But the Rams would chip away at the lead with two runs in the seventh and eighth innings before breaking through with three runs in the ninth – with the go-ahead run coming on an RBI single by Jack Harnisch that was his third of the day. Jos...
This week will start to actually feel like baseball season for two reasons It’s slated to be above 50 degrees from Tuesday through Friday. Seven local teams will be in action Before this week, it’s only been a handful of teams to even get on the field let alone have more than one game at a time. So this will be fun. We used to do the “What’s On Tap” every Monday back in 2015-’16, but it just got too tedious when there’s 15 teams playing multiple times per week. Also, I replaced it with the Weekly Power Rankings, which I haven’t started up yet. Here’s the local teams that will be action this week. Tuesday: Fordham @ Stony Brook 2pm Felician @ Molloy 3:30pm Wednesday: Sacred Heart @ Fordham 3pm LIU @ Farleigh-Dickinson 1pm Thursday: Felic...
So I usually do Power Rankings each week during the college baseball season, but it’s not really a smart idea to do that (yet) in my opinion until all the teams start up. Even out of the Division-I programs, Fordham and LIU have not played a game yet. Fordham was scheduled to start last week but due to COVID cases in the school, athletics paused for 2 weeks. They are now scheduled to open up this Friday against NJIT at 12. LIU is scheduled to open up a week from Wednesday against Farleigh-Dickinson, a game I will be monitoring considering FDU has three LI natives (Tommy Verga , Mike Veit and TJ Werner). This weekend, we will get our first taste of a Division-II program (Molloy) and Division-III (St. Joseph’s). The frustrating part for me is that since most teams are only playin...
Opening Day in the northeast ⚾️ ❄️ pic.twitter.com/3nxtFF8UMl — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 26, 2021 Well, it’s not Port St. Lucie but Joe Nathan Field was the site for Stony Brook’s Opening Day in 2021. The Seawolves were slated to face the University of Michigan this weekend to kick off the season but obviously COVID was having none of that. Matt Senk‘s squad opened up at home in February for the first time in school history. They were able to capture both ends of a DH against Sacred Heart University by the scores of 1-0 and 7-1. Pitching was lights-out in both games, but they put their foot on the gas pedal from the start in the second game. Coach Senk thanked coach Tyler Kavanaugh following the game for having his pitchers prepared to go 80-85 pitche...
Raab topping at 88 MPH today pic.twitter.com/PVdE6H91mx — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 18, 2020 When you are pitching on the same staff as other established arms like Rafe Schlesinger, Tommy Ventimiglia, Dylan Johnson and Jacob Steinmetz, it can be hard to garner all the attention. But 6’5 RHP J.T. Raab (MacArthur 2021) has certainly turned heads with his performance this summer and fall for the Long Island Titans-Quattrini. The No. 1 ranked 2021 team in the region had an outstanding summer, and finished off with a bang at the Northeast Elite Tournament. For the year, Raab posted an unblemished record of 9-0 with a 0.49 ERA. As if that’s not impressive enough, his peripheral numbers were even more astounding. He struck out 12.7 batters per 9, allowed 2.6 hits pe...
Redshirt senior Brian Herrmann (Northport 2016) is fully recovered from TJ surgery in April 2019. Fastball sitting 89-90 MPH. Has thrown 202.2 IP for the Seawolves in his career pic.twitter.com/MR9tR5MhEW — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 15, 2020 The pitching staff of the Seawolves was off to an outstanding start to the 2020 season. They compiled a 3.66 ERA – including holding the high-powered Clemson lineup to just six runs over three games – before the season was cut short due to COVID-19. That series in particular against Clemson was enough reason for optimism regarding the team. Northeast teams have no business competing with the ACC teams in February and the Seawolves lost the middle game 1-0 in 10 innings. In that game, Sam Turcotte struck out seven over six...
Jason Campo is a power hitting first baseman from St. John the Baptist. The 2022 grad attended our Ducks Stadium Showcase back in August of 2019. Yesterday he announced his commitment to attend Stony Brook University. St. John the Baptist, who captured the CHSAA title in 2018, is building quite a program under Head Coach Casey McKay. Don’t be surprised if they are playing on Championship Monday next year. I spoke with Jason about his experience with the college recruiting process and a myriad of other topics, and here’s what he had to say… Can you explain your experience with the college recruitment process and why you chose Stony Brook? My college recruitment process went very smoothly. Every couple of weeks I would touch base with Jim Martin, the assistant coach for Sto...
Nick Tropeano on the mound for the Stony Brook Seawolves. Tropeano started the final Yankees intrasquad game before Opening Day next Thursday. Photo Credit: Stony Brook Athletics by Kenneth Fermin All eyes were on Gerrit Cole Friday night at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y. The pitcher who signed with the New York Yankees for $324 million this offseason took the mound for the final time before the 2020 Opening Day. While Cole impressed fans striking out the side opening the contest, the opposing pitcher matched the ace throwing zero’s on the scoreboard. West Islip High School (’08) and Stony Brook (’11) alum Nick Tropeano battled Cole on the pitching mound in the Yankees intrasquad game on July 17th. Tropeano, representing the ‘Bombers,’ gave up two singles and struck out three batters in...
