By Anthony DiCocco With a number of teams snowed out this weekend, only three local squads were in action on Friday. Let’s see how these three Division I schools fared. Stony Brook 11, FIU 1 F/7 First of many, congratulations to our leader! 👏 🌊🐺 x #NCAABaseball pic.twitter.com/YlFMSm3J93 — Stony Brook Baseball (@StonyBrookBASE) February 28, 2026 In a run-ruled shortened affair, the Seawolves cruised to their first win of the season, which also acted as Jim Martin’s first victory as the team’s head coach. Micah Worley shoved for Stony Brook across six scoreless innings, striking out 11 batters while walking one and allowing two hits. With its No. 1 pitcher at his best, the Seawolves’ offense took care of the rest. Stony Brook capitalized on an error in the first inning, as Chanz Doughty gro...
When you win at every stop you’re at, it is no coincidence – winners win. West Islip-native Patrick Cantwell has won championships for his little league, high school, college, minor league and major league teams. He was the ultimate field general and stop sign behind the dish. But first, let’s turn the clock back. The Early Days Patrick was born and raised in West Islip. He was the second child, he has a sister named Kim. They are a family of athletes – his mother played softball, bowling and was a cheerleader. His father played high school baseball. His sister played soccer, track and gymnastics. From a young age, he was drawn to professional athletes that not only won but held themselves to a high standard such as Derek Jeter, Michael Jordan, Ken Griffey Jr and Mi...
by Braden Daniello A new chapter begins 📕 We’re proud to announce the promotion and hiring of our new head coach, Jim Martin! 📰 → https://t.co/WH8WQDEzAj 🌊🐺 x #NCAABaseball x @JimMartin33_15 pic.twitter.com/8rfgjAB7Xu — Stony Brook Baseball (@StonyBrookBASE) June 12, 2025 Perhaps hard work does indeed pay off. It certainly holds true for Jim Martin, the newly named baseball coach for the Stony Brook Seawolves. Martin, who spent eight seasons as an associate coach within the Stony Brook baseball program, was promoted this past summer when legendary longtime skipper Matt Senk retired after 35 years with the Seawolves. The shoes of Coach Senk will not be easy to fill, but Martin says he is up to the task and is looking forward to his new role this upcoming season. For Martin, baseball i...
by Tucker Terranova This past Monday, the Murray State baseball program continued its improbable postseason run, defeating Duke 5-4 in the final game of their best-of-three Super Regional series and earning the program’s first-ever trip to Omaha. The win marks just the fourth time a No. 4 seed has advanced to the College World Series and the second time in three seasons after Oral Roberts accomplished the feat in 2023. Alongside Oral Roberts’ Cinderella run and the 2008 Fresno State team—the first and only No. 4 seed to win the CWS—it was another underdog, close to home, that once shook the baseball world. The Stony Brook Seawolves entered the 2012 season as a program on the rise—riding five consecutive winning campaigns, including a 42-12 record in 2011 that ended without an NCAA tourname...
(Editor’s Note: This is the first part of a multi-part series in which we highlight some of the local college programs during their Fall Ball season. Special thanks to Revolution Athletics for sponsoring this year’s series. Make sure to check them out here. ) You couldn’t have had a better October day for baseball on Long Island. It seemed to appear as more of an August day than October 21 with the temperature hitting 80 degrees in Stony Brook. We were checking up on the Seawolves as they prepare for the 2025 season – which will be the 35th under Head Coach Matt Senk. They are coming off a 2024 season in which they finished with an overall record of 24-28 (12-15 in CAA play). It was their second season in the CAA conference after switching from the America East foll...
Tied again! Jalen Josey comes through with a 2-out, 2-strike RBI single and it’s 3-3 as we head to the 9th pic.twitter.com/cSDmQT8C5G — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 27, 2024 Coming off a magical ride in 2023 which included capturing the NY State Catholic League Championship, it was a bit of a youth movement for the Holy Trinity Titans. Even so, they were able to get hot at the right time and reach the CHSAA Finals against St. Anthony’s. Josey was a bright spot for the Titans. After getting called up from JV halfway through the season, all he did was go 12-for-38 (.316) with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 10 RBIs and 9 runs scored. He came through with a clutch game-tying hit in extra innings of the finals. This past week he announced his verbal commitment to Stony Brook University...

Though he was just a sophomore, he led the way offensively with a .420 batting average, .553 OBP and incredible 1.321 OPS. He compiled 29 hits, six doubles, six triples, four HRs, drove in 29 runs and scored 15 runs. He recently announced his commitment to Stony Brook University. He still has two full seasons of high school remaining, which is certainly bad news for opposing pitchers. His coach Colin Fratrik had the followin...

In this edition, we catch up with Greg Marino, a former standout pitcher at Centereach HS and Stony Brook University.) Standing 6’6 and throwing in the low 90s, Greg Marino was an intimidating presence on the mound for Stony Brook University. The hard-throwing RHP pitched three seasons for Matt Senk including starting an NCAA Regional game in 2019 against LSU. Following his collegiate career, Marino followed in his brother’s footsteps and played in the Frontier League with the Southern Illinois Miners for the 2019 season. But just like that, he decided his professional baseball career was done at the age of 22. Could he have continued? Sure...
