by Mike Anderson Sophomore Sean Costello comes through with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 8th for Seaford to beat Clarke 5-4 pic.twitter.com/hEzPO6q0nh — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 28, 2021 After falling just short in the county finals tournament, Seaford High School will look to have another good year in 2022. Last year, they put together a very strong showing, going 14-4 overall and 14-2 in conference play. They were ultimately eliminated by Island Trees, who went on to win the title. Despite a disappointing end, Seaford has a lot to look forward to in 2022. Despite losing a pair of all-county players to graduation (pitcher Tom Hartmann and shortstop/pitcher Anthony Ippoliti), Seaford has a large core of returning players, as 15 are expected to be back in 2022. This year was bizarre from the jump – so I understand that a lot of decisions had to be made for the first time. That much is true. That still doesn’t mean that common sense doesn’t apply. So when Nassau and Suffolk each switched up their conference formats for this season, there was going to be a decision that needed to be made. At the most basic level, Nassau had five conference and Suffolk had six. That would be fine if there was no Long Island Championship involved, but once they decided that June 20th would be the Long Island Championship day – they needed a way to even it out. According to my source, the conventional wisdom would suggest that Nassau Conference V would play a playoff like the other leagues – top 2 get byes, 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 in the first ro...
Michael Milano is entering his 17th season as head coach of Seaford and he’s excited to watch his team play baseball again, but it’s what did not happen last year that still bothers him. “A lot of guys have emptiness in their hearts about last year,” he said in regards to losing out on the 2020 season. “We really invested a lot in those guys, we took our lumps with them and we were going to be very tough to beat,” he added. Milano noted that he had 15 seniors in the ’20 class. Of those, seven were everyday players and his top two starters, Frank Cozzolino and Chris Pupa were co-aces since their sophomore seasons. They were both All-County pitchers in 2019 and their catcher, Nick Barreiros, was a standout player that is now at Queens College. “...
by Zevan Shuster For most high school and college coaches, consistency and continuity are the things they crave the most, yet have the least. However, for Seaford head coach Michael Milano, he has the luxury of having them en masse. “I don’t think it’s going to take us time to gel because we have 15 seniors. They are all in their 4th year of playing Seaford high school baseball. Well over five of them have been starting players since they were sophomores, and two juniors also played every day last year as sophomores. So I think this team is used to being around each other. They played four playoff games last year. Only one everyday player graduated,” Milano said. As big of an advantage as Milano’s squad may have, and as much of a proverbial head start they may be afforded when it comes t...
Colin Diez is the @BsbLifestyle101 player of the game after firing a complete game shutout allowing just three hits. He also had three hits at the plate with an RBI. pic.twitter.com/AmLeCTVFL9 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 20, 2019 Once again, the Division Blue Dragons are headed back to the semifinals. On Monday afternoon, Division dominated Seaford, shutting them out 9-0. From the beginning of this game, it was never really close. The Division lineup wasted no time getting to the Seaford pitching staff on the mound, as Matt Cavanagh, Colin Diez and Hunter Traenkle all ripped singles to begin the bottom of the 1st. This gave them an early 2-0 lead. The entire Division lineup continued to display their hot bats as the game went on. Mike Sullivan, Hunter Traenkle and Joe Natale...
FINAL: Seaford 10 Carle Place 1 pic.twitter.com/JIPUlU1VJT — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 28, 2019 On Thursday afternoon, Seaford crushed Carle Place 10-1 in a non-league contest. From the beginning of this game, Seaford’s offense was clicking on all cylinders. Tim Saulpaugh drove in the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the 1st. Saulpaugh finished 2-3 on the day with 2 RBI. “We were seeing the ball well and we kept hitting the ball hard staying calm and relaxed getting a lot of guys on base,” said Saulpaugh. “In the field we played very nice didn’t make many errors and we looked very good today in our season opener,” he added. Seaford tacked onto their lead with two more in the third inning, courtesy of a Nick Barreri...
Coming off back-to-back conference championships in 2016 and 2017, Seaford took a bit of a step back last year. They finished 12-9 and dropped both playoff games by a score of 4-2. After graduating 12 seniors and ending the season with two consecutive losses, it would seem Seaford is expecting to fill a significant amount of holes if they wish to be conference championship contenders once again. For many reasons, the Vikings are hanging their head high and staying optimistic for the 2019 season. “We are very excited about the large amount of juniors that played a lot as sophomores in 2018,” stated Head Coach Mike Milano. Offensively, the Vikings will be lead by senior SS Tim Saulpaugh. In 2018, Tim batted .415 with 18 stolen bases and only struck out four times. As a result, he...
With one week remaining in the regular season, things are really starting to heat up in Class A. As of right now, there is not one dominant team in Nassau County. This means that we are in for an outstanding postseason. With that being said, here’s this weeks new and improved top 5. 5) Lynbrook (9-3) (Last week: 2) After dropping the first 2 games of the series to North Shore, the Owls bounced back in game 3, winning 11-3. Last week marked Lynbrook’s first series loss all year, but they have no reason to panic. North Shore always seems to get hot at the right time, so it makes plenty of sense that they played their best baseball of the year last week. With 3 games left to play, Lynbrook still holds a 2 game lead for first place. All they have to do is beat Valley Stream South o...
After a crazy week of baseball, 3 new teams have earned a spot in the top 5. With only 2 weeks left of play, virtually every conference title is up for grabs. Let’s take a look at the new top 5. 5) Garden City (6-2-1) (Last week: Unranked) Being on the outside looking in for the entire season, the Trojans have finally cracked the top 5. Rich Marooney and TJ McEvoy continue to carry this experienced team offensively, along with help from Andrew Nagal on the mound. After beating MacArthur this past week, it’s safe to say Garden City is now the favorite to win conference A1. With an easy series coming up against Great Neck South, Garden City will look to solidify its spot as the top team in the conference. 4) Plainedge (7-2) (Last week: 5) Plainedge continues to impress more and m...
With opening day less than a month a month away, baseball fans and players alike are beginning to get excited about the start of the season. Conference A1 Conference Champs – Garden City (10-5) 2nd Place – MacArthur (10-5) 3rd Place – Mepham (9-5) Conference MVP – Jason Coules (Bellmore JFK) Cy Young – Bobby Lewis (MacArthur) Coming off of a stellar postseason run in which they knocked off the defending county champion Division Blue Dragons, the Trojans enter the 2017 season with plenty of experience under their belt and a real shot at a county championship.
