The offense of the Raiders scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead – and they would not look back as they held on to win, 11-3. As they say, ‘if you’re gonna score, score early’ on the best pitchers. Once they settle in, they are usually extremely tough to beat. Sachem North jumped all over College of Charleston-commit Josh Knoth early and scored three...

Sachem North Leaning on Leadership To Prepare for Upcoming Season

Brandon O’Neill (Sachem North 2023) with a max exit velo of 86.3 pic.twitter.com/9cvT7uFRfK — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) November 8, 2020 We’ve looked at many unique storylines for this upcoming season such as teams with no returning varsity experience, or teams that haven’t been able to gather in-person yet and even teams that are missing half their players to other sports. Sachem North is the first team we’ve previewed that is running into the issue of their coaching staff being multi-sport coaches. Of the four coaches at the varsity level, all are still in their Spring I seasons – including head coach Tom Gambino who is an assistant for the varsity football team. This has certainly impacted the amount of preparation that they have been able to put...

Legendary Coach Bill Batewell Passes Away At Age 79

(Photo Credit: The Sachem Report) When a legendary member of the Long Island baseball community bases, we mourn together. One of the most successful and longest-tenured coaches on Long Island, Bill Batewell, passed away this week at the age of 79. He was currently the head coach of Bellport HS, but made his impact on the Sachem community. He began his career as a JV coach in 1970 and became the varsity coach in 1975 and held that position until 2004. During that time, he led Sachem to 452 wins and county titles in 1979 and 1987, which remained the only two in school history until 2011. During his tenure with Sachem, Neal Heaton and Mike Parisi went on to become big leaguers. Additionally, more than 20 of his former players went on to become head coaches. This may be even more impressive th...

Up Next Powered by The Yard Sports Academy: Brandon O’Neill

(Editor’s Note: This is the sixth installment of the popular ‘Up Next’ Series Powered by The Yard Sports Academy. In this series, we feature the best players on Long Island that have yet to appear in a varsity game. Previously, we featured Andrew Koshy, Josh Knoth, Chris Batuyios, Sebastian Lippman and TJ Bradford. Thank you for your continued interest.) When you’re looking to build a team, it’s important that you have a strong presence up-the-middle. New Mets GM Jared Porter specifically mentioned that in Monday’s press conference when discussing the needs of the Mets. They addressed that need on Saturday with the signing of free agent catcher James McCann. He’s a player that really improved his pitch framing (sixth in the MLB), he throws out 46 p...

Where Are They Now: Alec Sole

(Editor’s Note: This piece originally ran on December 11, 2019) Trailing West Islip in the first round of their playoff game, things weren’t looking too promising for the Arrows of Sachem North. While they were one of the top teams in League 2 all 2011, all it takes is running into one hot team in the single-elimination postseason to end a season. That all changed with a late-inning rally that delivered a 3-2 victory that helped stave off elimination and propel them into the next round of the playoffs. Once that happened, the team would never look back. “After that victory, we said to ourselves ‘alright we’re gonna win this thing’, said Alec Sole, as he reminisced on the best season of his life. The Arrows went on a hot-streak from that point on, rattling off consecutive wins against...

He came up big today with five innings in Sachem North‘s 6-4 victory in a League II showdown against Bay Shore at Bethpage Ballpark. Joshuel Rodriguez countered him for Bay Shore and both pitchers were sharp through three innings, as the game was scoreless. The Marauders got on the board in the top of the fourth on two wild pitches to take a 2-0 lead, but the Arrows answered back with a huge fifth inning. Matt Ingraffia started things up with a lead off walk and advanced to third o...

Sachem North 2020 Season Preview

by Tony Genualdo After making the playoffs in 2018, Sachem North last season looked to make another playoff run. Unfortunately, they came one game short of getting back. A few injuries to the team seemed to have been the coup de grâce due to not having enough depth on the roster. The parity in League 2 was pretty remarkable as six of the seven teams remained in playoff contention until the last game of the season. Ultimately, Sachem North was unable to seal the deal and clinch a berth as they did in 2018. But this year is a new year, and Coach Tom Gambino is excited to see who will step up for the team. “It will be a fun competition to see who takes jobs,” Gambino said. “Many young guys will have an opportunity to play a significant role for us.” Out of the three starting pitchers last yea...

Sachem North Ready For the Grind of League II

Mount Saint Vincent’s-commit Jake Pierre (Sachem North 2019) getting his swings in pic.twitter.com/uDMTD7jfcC — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 8, 2019 Playing in League 2 is an incredible challenge. Sachem North Head Coach Tom Gambino has been at the helm since 2005 and knows the league inside-and-out and he recognizes this as well. “Connetquot and Commack are the heavy favorites,” said Gambino. “Connetquot is bringing back almost everyone from last year. Every team in the league is good,” he added. Four teams were represented in the postseason, including these Sachem North Arrows, who finished the regular season with a record of 11-9, before dropping both playoff games to Commack and Longwood. To add to the challenge, the team graduated their o...

Who Is Jack Gonzalez?

Sachem North made a surprise playoff run in a difficult League 2 this season thanks to a strong pitching staff led by Chris Lollo, Kevin Kochen and Jack Gonzalez. Lollo is at Washington College, Kochen is at Queens College and Gonzalez announced yesterday that he has committed to St. Thomas Aquinas. They are coming off an appearance in the Div-II College World Series, where they won the first two games before falling just short of the ultimate goal. Gonzalez is a crafty left-handed pitcher that works in the 78-79 MPH range, but has tremendous command of his pitches. He had a very good summer with Motus Academy, where he was named to the All-Tournament team of the WWBA in Georgia. He will be leading the Arrows’ rotation in 2018 as they look to build on this year’s 11-win season....
