Pat-Med Hopeful to Make Playoff Push After Graduating Carl Yastrzemski Award Winner

By Anthony DiCocco A season ago, Pat-Med made another playoff appearance while its 16 wins matched its second-highest season total in the past 15 years. Now head coach Anthony Frascogna and the Raiders will attempt to replicate that success without last year’s Carl Yastrzemski Award winner. RHP/CF Jayden Stroman — the younger brother of current MLB free agent Marcus Stroman — powered Pat-Med in all aspects of the game last season. When on the mound, Stroman went 5-0, posting a 0.70 ERA and 0.76 walks and hits per inning pitched with 50 strikeouts in just 20 innings pitched. Up Next Powered by Ken Kortright State Farm: Evan Picciano

(Editor’s Note: This is the fifth installment of the 2025 Up Next Series in which we highlight the top underclassmen on Long Island. Previously, we highlighted Jack Mulligan, Alex Pagano, Quincy Gibbs, Michael Cotto and Charlie Edwards. Special thanks to Ken Kortright State Farm Agency for sponsoring this year’s series.) Evan Picciano (Pat-Med 2029) pic.twitter.com/0t4RNgcGFm — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) December 1, 2025 In the history of Patchogue-Medford HS – which has featured some extremely high-end players in recent history, there has never been an 8th grader that has played as much as Evan Picciano did this past season. Think about that – they have a current big leaguer with 11 years of experience, another that played for Team USA, and a first round pick j...

GAME RECAP: Jayden Stroman Strikes Out 12 over 4 Innings, Pat-Med Wins 7-1

Final: Pat-Med 7, William Floyd 1 WP: Jayden Stroman (4 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 12 Ks) Kentoffio: 2-3, 2 RBIs, 2 R Stroman: 1-2, 2 BB, 2 R Pat-Med improves to 7-2 pic.twitter.com/MRbS8iQQ4y — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 19, 2025 Even with over a dozen scouts lined up behind home plate, Jayden Stroman was unfazed. The flame-throwing Duke-commit fired 4 hitless innings, recording 12 strikeouts and yielding two walks. He earned the win in a 7-1 victory by Pat-Med over League I rival William Floyd. “They’re people just like you and me,” said Stroman in regards to how he stays focused amidst the flurry of scouts. “There’s people on the sides, it’s the same thing – to me they’re just standing in a different location.” After Stroman stru...

Where Are They Now: Jeff Schaefer

(Photo Credit: Jeff Siner/ Charlotte Observer) Knowing a strike was looming, Jeff Schaefer walked into manager Tony LaRussa’s office in 1994. “I need you to send me to the minors,” said Schaefer. “What do you mean?” LaRussa replied. “Well, I have a nice minor league split on my contract.” “Okay, Iet me see what I can do,” said LaRossa. Shortly after, Schaefer was granted his request to be sent to Triple-A Tacoma, which would not be shut down despite the strike at the Major League Level. “I’m forever grateful to Tony LaRussa for that,” said Schaefer. Schaefer went to Triple-A assuming that the strike would be resolved in short order. But that was not the case – in fact it leaked into Spring Training and at 34-year...

Coming Off Playoff Appearance, Pat-Med Energized With Addition of Jayden Stroman

Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s series  by Max Edelman All eyes on Long Island will be on the Pat-Med Raiders in 2025. Speaking of the number 25, head coach Anthony Frascogna will be entering his 25th year in charge of the Raiders. In his 24th season, Frascogna looked back on what he believed was a strong season for his team. “We played well.” Frascgona said. “We made the playoffs, finished 12-11 overall. We won a playoff game and then we got knocked out by William Floyd.” Last year’s Raiders team featured six seniors who started on varsity, with a number of them continuing to play ball in college. Including Rob Melo who is playing at Army, David Granucci who’s at SUNY Maritime and Nick Cadolino who’s playing at SUNY Polytechnic.  Thi...

Baseball fans are certainly familiar with his older brother, Marcus, who also graduated from Patchogue-Medford and attended Duke University where he was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the first round of the 2012 draft. He debuted in the big leagues in 2014 and just helped lead the New York Yankees to capturing the American League pennant. Jayden attended the Stony Brook School in 2021, 2022 and 2023 before heading to Florida to attend IMG Academy in 2024. His decision t...

Tools of Intelligence: Talking with the Catchers of Long Island’s Recent Aces

by Pat Duryea Pitchers are unique animals. No one pitcher is the same. Each pitcher has a unique mix of pitches, movement, and velocity. To find those wrangling the pitchers, you look no further than right behind home plate. The catcher. Nobody knows a pitcher better than their catcher. Catching is far from a passive profession, they must strategize just as much as any pitcher and do a whole lot of dirty work. But as we examine the top pitchers in Suffolk County across the past two seasons there is no better perspective to hear from, than that of their catchers.  Pat-Med 2, Sachem East 0 WP: Josh Knoth (6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 15 Ks) S: Jack Costello Jayden Kennedy: RBI double, bases loaded walk Pat-Med will face No. 1 Connetquot tomorrow pic.twitter.com/ORo94RMhrG — Axcess Baseball LI (@axc...

Pat-Med Looking to Build on Last Year’s Class AA County Finals Appearance

by Aaron Diaz (Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s season preview series.) 🚨 Upset Alert 🚨 Final: Pat-Med 3, Connetquot 2 WP: Jack Costello (CG, 1 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 2 Ks) Rob Melo: RBI single Jack Costello: sac fly Bryan Frascogna: RBI single Pat-Med will play the winner of Ward Melville-Longwood on Saturday pic.twitter.com/T6NLwIJdH6 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 17, 2023 Patchogue-Medford finished with an 18-8 record and is always in the conversation when playing playoff baseball in May. Last year’s County Finals appearance was no different. They ran into an exceptional Commack team, however, that halted their championship aspirations. “We got pretty far last year and made it to the County Finals,” said Patchogue-Medford head coach ...

GAME RECAP: Jack Costello Fires Gem, Pat-Med Pulls Off Upset at No. 1 Connetquot

🚨 Upset Alert 🚨 Final: Pat-Med 3, Connetquot 2 WP: Jack Costello (CG, 1 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 2 Ks) Rob Melo: RBI single Jack Costello: sac fly Bryan Frascogna: RBI single Pat-Med will play the winner of Ward Melville-Longwood on Saturday pic.twitter.com/T6NLwIJdH6 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 17, 2023 Baseball is a unique game filled with quirks and statistical oddities. Here’s one for you: three times since 2003, Connetquot was the No.1 seed in the Suffolk AA postseason and were defeated by Pat-Med at home. There’s no rhyme or reason to that, each team was comprised of entirely different players but each time the Raiders were able to do something exceptionally difficult – beat one of the best teams on Long Island on their own turf. Pat-Med certainly hasn’t ...

GAME RECAP: Bryan Frascogna Drives in 2 Runs With Bases Loaded Hit, Josh Knoth Continues Brilliance

Final: Pat-Med 4, Longwood 0 WP: Josh Knoth (5.1 IP, 13 Ks, 0 H, 4 BBs) Frank Kentoffio: 2-R HR Bryan Frascogna: 2-R single to break scoreless tie The teams are now even in the standings pic.twitter.com/MxWzNob6uY — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 8, 2023 Simply put, when you have a potential first round draft pick on the mound, you feel pretty good about your chances to win. Even so, the Pat-Med Raiders found themselves in a 0-0 game against rival Longwood in the bottom of the third inning. Junior backstop, Bryan Frascogna, who spends most of the time doing thankless work behind the dish, took center stage and ripped a two-run single up the middle to score 2 runs. With Knoth on the mound, that was about one run more than they needed. Bryan Frascogna broke the scoreless tie with a...

Led by Reigning Carl Yastrzemski Award Winner, Pat-Med Ready to Go

by Nick Cipolla Last year was a memorable one for the Raiders as they continued their winning ways, finishing 13-5 in League I and clinching another playoff berth in the process. Pat-Med looked like a contender to win the County Championship, but unfortunately they were bounced from the playoffs by Floyd, ending one of their best seasons in recent memory. We were able to talk with head coach Anthony Frascogna about the season and the upcoming season. “Solid season with a disappointing ending”, said Frascogna, “We have to make fielding the ball a priority this season. Have to be able to overcome some of the external forces that weigh in on the game sometimes.. making errors didn’t allow us to do that”. The Raiders will only be losing two guys from their core in 2022, Outfielder Tyree ...

Exclusive Q & A With Ole Miss-commit Josh Knoth

Bottom 2: Knoth gets back to work in a scoreless game pic.twitter.com/i8Eg8wC06f — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 27, 2022 Long Island is a pitching-rich region, and right now there is nobody that possesses more talent and current pedigree than Josh Knoth. He won the Carl Yastrzemski Award given to the top player in Suffolk County. Since then, he has appeared in the Area Code Games, East Coast Pro, the PG All-American Game, Baseball Factory All-American Game and the MLB/USA All-American Game. He is projected to be a third-round pick in the upcoming MLB Draft, but with an outside shot to go earlier if he matches or exceeds his 2022 season. He also signed his NLI with the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) – one of the top programs in the country. But despite all the atte...
