Maritime Sweeps Old Westbury In Thrilling Conference DH

What a thrilling match up it was at the Jackie Robinson Sports Complex at SUNY Old Westbury. Maritime was able to manifest two victories in the DH against Skyline Conference foe Old Westbury on Sunday improving their conference record to 4-0. With both clubs sitting atop the Skyline Conference, it was sure to be a well-played couple of games. Both teams continued to show positive signs, but Maritime emerged as the victors this go round. Old Westbury displayed some solid offense on the day, but the defense is what plagued them–posting eight errors in total between the two games ultimately leading to their defeat. I was on The Smithtown West Varsity team as a 9th grader, competing until my senior year. Having a few strong players ahead of me, I was able to see how they would handle situations on and off field, forcing me to grow as a person and player. Having these experiences, I was able to become a leader myself in my later years on the team. Coach Mike Miller had helped me develop my confidence, work counts, and teach me the mechanics on how to throw different pitches. Old Westbury Prepared to Return to Top of Skyline Conference

In the two years that we’ve done our Awards Banquet, Old Westbury has quietly led the Long Island programs with eight players represented on the All-Long Island team. Coach Rod Stephan has done a commendable job building up the program, and has now averaged 25.1 wins per year since he took over in 2011. He has also had three pitchers drafted during his tenure–the only three players the Skyline Conference has had drafted during that time. With that being the case, it is certainly time to take them seriously.
