Go-ahead 3-R HR by Joey Marchese puts Shoreham-Wading River up 5-3 in the top of the fourth pic.twitter.com/kyV05kSkBA — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 12, 2021 Hits from the bottom of the lineup and lead changes are two signs of a competitive, compelling game of varsity baseball. When you combine the two, it’s even more thrilling. With one swing of the bat, Shoreham-Wading River’s eight-hole hitter, Joey Marchese, gave the Wildcats the 5-3 lead over Mount Sinai. They wound up tacking on two more, and holding on to defeat the Mustangs on the road by the score of 7-5. Marchese stated that he “was standing in the box and looking for a fastball to hit hard – got my pitch and took a good swing and got it out,” said the 6’4 slugger. With the victory...
by Ben Diamond Mount Sinai head coach Erik Reichenbach, like most other coaches, finds it difficult to have any expectations for this coming season, with his players having been unable to play on a high school field in over a year. Reichenbach knows this year’s group is young, with a lot of juniors and sophomores, who he hasn’t seen play since they were freshman and eighth graders. He does coach a handful of his players over the summer so he knows that they have been putting in work, but other than the handful of players, he doesn’t know the work the rest of the team has put in. “It’s hard to have expectations when you have a group of kids that haven’t played on a high school baseball field in a year.” Reichenbach said. “Most of my team is returning, but majority are young juniors an...
Coach Eric Reichenbach knew he had an extremely young team in 2019. In fact, it featured six freshmen that received regular playing time – the most in his 16 year tenure. “I didn’t know what to expect going into the season with all those freshmen,” said Reichenbach. “Playing varsity as a freshman is like playing four years up. They certainly exceeded my expectation – we wound up competing for a league championship until the last week of the season,” he added. His team composed of six freshmen wound up finishing with a league record of 9-6 – losing in the postseason to East Islip – but a remarkable feat for such a young team. What they did have was three senior pitchers and the League MVP in SS T.J. Werner. “T.J. is everything you&...
(Photo Credit: WVU Athletics) The phrase ‘bittersweet’ is often overused in sports media. There is not a more apropos phrase, however, to describe 2019 for Mount Sinai-native Sam Kessler. Let’s start with the bad. With his team hosting the NCAA Regional against Texas A & M, he was on the mound and yielded a walk-off grand slam with two outs in the 9th inning on a full count to turn a 10-7 lead by West Virginia into an 11-10 victory for Texas A & M. The loss eliminated the Mountaineers and with social media’s ubiquity, the clip has been played 2.5 million times on Twitter. Kessler noted that he thinks about it every day. What made matters worse, he stated was that his West Virginia squad was hosting the regional and that they led 9-1 in the fifth inning befor...
(Today was our Game of the Week Presented by Muddy Locker Sports. Please check them out by clicking here.) In his first outing of the year, Kevin Hahn could not have looked more comfortable, even in moments of discomfort. The senior right-hander took a line drive off his body and calmly picked the ball up and fired to first for an out in the fifth inning. He allowed only two hits and one walk in total and retired the last seven hitters to face him to complete the 1-0 shutout for the Bayport-Blue Point Phantoms over Mount Sinai. It was one of those games that moved quickly and if you stepped aside for a few moments you likely missed a couple innings. Both Hahn and T.J. DeGennero, the starter for Mount Sinai, were terrific in this game. They both cruised through the first inning without inci...
Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is 8th grader Kyle Salvati who recorded the save in Mount Sinai’s 9-4 victory over Shoreham-Wading River pic.twitter.com/090WdVUNMO — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 7, 2018 Mount Sinai is coming off a 12-win season in which they ran into a buzzsaw in Southampton‘s ace, Jem Sisco. The junior fired a one-hit shutout with 11 Ks against a very talented Mustangs lineup that featured four seniors that went on to play at college. Those players are Ryan Picarello (Adelphi), Jared Donnelly (NJIT), Ethan Angress (CCNY) and George Rainer (RPI). “We had a really good group of kids,” said Head Coach Eric Reichenbach, who just finished his 14th season. “We were hamstrung a little with our No. 1 pitcher going down and missing the...
