Jim Martin Ready for Challenge of Following Legendary Coach Matt Senk

by Braden Daniello A new chapter begins 📕 We’re proud to announce the promotion and hiring of our new head coach, Jim Martin! 📰 → https://t.co/WH8WQDEzAj 🌊🐺 x #NCAABaseball x @JimMartin33_15 pic.twitter.com/8rfgjAB7Xu — Stony Brook Baseball (@StonyBrookBASE) June 12, 2025 Perhaps hard work does indeed pay off. It certainly holds true for Jim Martin, the newly named baseball coach for the Stony Brook Seawolves. Martin, who spent eight seasons as an associate coach within the Stony Brook baseball program, was promoted this past summer when legendary longtime skipper Matt Senk retired after 35 years with the Seawolves. The shoes of Coach Senk will not be easy to fill, but Martin says he is up to the task and is looking forward to his new role this upcoming season. For Martin, baseball i...

“Shock the World”: Revisiting the 2012 Stony Brook Seawolves’ Run to Omaha

by Tucker Terranova This past Monday, the Murray State baseball program continued its improbable postseason run, defeating Duke 5-4 in the final game of their best-of-three Super Regional series and earning the program’s first-ever trip to Omaha. The win marks just the fourth time a No. 4 seed has advanced to the College World Series and the second time in three seasons after Oral Roberts accomplished the feat in 2023. Alongside Oral Roberts’ Cinderella run and the 2008 Fresno State team—the first and only No. 4 seed to win the CWS—it was another underdog, close to home, that once shook the baseball world. The Stony Brook Seawolves entered the 2012 season as a program on the rise—riding five consecutive winning campaigns, including a 42-12 record in 2011 that ended without an NCAA tourname...

Fall Ball Series Powered by Revolution Athletics: Stony Brook

(Editor’s Note: This is the first part of a multi-part series in which we highlight some of the local college programs during their Fall Ball season. Special thanks to Revolution Athletics for sponsoring this year’s series. Make sure to check them out here. ) You couldn’t have had a better October day for baseball on Long Island. It seemed to appear as more of an August day than October 21 with the temperature hitting 80 degrees in Stony Brook. We were checking up on the Seawolves as they prepare for the 2025 season – which will be the 35th under Head Coach Matt Senk. They are coming off a 2024 season in which they finished with an overall record of 24-28 (12-15 in CAA play). It was their second season in the CAA conference after switching from the America East foll...

Fall Ball Series Powered by Baseball Lifestyle: Stony Brook

DOGPILE SZN: COMMENCE 💪 🌊🐺 x @evangiordano12 pic.twitter.com/XZ21Ry4wgb — Stony Brook Baseball (@StonyBrookBASE) May 21, 2022 You can’t blame them for feeling like there’s some unfinished business. The seniors for the Stony Brook Seawolves have dealt with circumstances beyond their control for each of their previous three seasons of collegiate ball – COVID in 2020, the infamous “rainout” in the championship in 2021 and then the America East ruling that Stony Brook was ineligible to compete for the conference tournament in 2022. Each situation was different but frustrating in their own way. Last year seemed like the most avoidable, as the commissioner simply could’ve allowed the Seawolves to participate in the tournament, but ruled against it since they w...

Stony Brook Sweeps Season-Opening DH From Sacred Heart

Opening Day in the northeast ⚾️ ❄️ pic.twitter.com/3nxtFF8UMl — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 26, 2021 Well, it’s not Port St. Lucie but Joe Nathan Field was the site for Stony Brook’s Opening Day in 2021. The Seawolves were slated to face the University of Michigan this weekend to kick off the season but obviously COVID was having none of that. Matt Senk‘s squad opened up at home in February for the first time in school history. They were able to capture both ends of a DH against Sacred Heart University by the scores of 1-0 and 7-1. Pitching was lights-out in both games, but they put their foot on the gas pedal from the start in the second game. Coach Senk thanked coach Tyler Kavanaugh following the game for having his pitchers prepared to go 80-85 pitche...

Fall Ball Series Powered by East Coast S & P: Stony Brook University

Redshirt senior Brian Herrmann (Northport 2016) is fully recovered from TJ surgery in April 2019. Fastball sitting 89-90 MPH. Has thrown 202.2 IP for the Seawolves in his career pic.twitter.com/MR9tR5MhEW — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 15, 2020 The pitching staff of the Seawolves was off to an outstanding start to the 2020 season. They compiled a 3.66 ERA – including holding the high-powered Clemson lineup to just six runs over three games – before the season was cut short due to COVID-19. That series in particular against Clemson was enough reason for optimism regarding the team. Northeast teams have no business competing with the ACC teams in February and the Seawolves lost the middle game 1-0 in 10 innings. In that game, Sam Turcotte struck out seven over six...

Highlights of IG Live With Kevin Courtney

(Photo Credit: Associated Press) Kevin Courtney is a former standout first baseman for Stony Brook University that was a sophomore during their historic run to the College World Series in 2012 in which they upset perennial powerhouse LSU on ESPN. Prior to that, he was a member of St. John the Baptist under former head coach John Habyan. He went 10-0 on the mound as a sophomore and was 6-1 with a 1.14 ERA and a .515 AVG as a senior in 2010. He went on IG Live to discuss his career, specifically the 2012 season. He now lives out in Los Angeles.     Here are some of the highlights from the hour long conversation. -The team was disappointed in how their 2011 season considering they had future MLB RHP Nick Tropeano atop their rotation and future pro third baseman Steve Marino, who was...

Dylan Resk’s Clutch Hit Delivers Stony Brook Victory in Home Opener

The big hit came on a two-run double by Dylan Resk in the sixth inning to score Brandon Alamo and Nick Grande which erased a 3-2 deficit. “For whatever reason we seemed to be out of our approach early in the game,” said Coach Matt Senk. “Obviously we preach being aggressive but we were being over-aggressive. Dylan had a really at bat there and came up with a big swing for us to take the lead,” he added. They still needed to get some big outs from their relievers, which is exactly what happened. Freshman Brian Morrisey (Commack) came on in relief and fired 1.2 shutout innings, before giving way to the closer, Aaron Pinto, who made a great 3-2 pitch to strike out Matt Padre on a 93 MPH heater to end the threat. Pinto came back out for the ninth and fired a 1-2-3 ninth...

Stony Brook Tops Sacred Heart 8-4

Written by Jim Ferchland Photo Credit: Jim Ferchland   The Stony Brook Seawolves have struggled 18 games into the season–as they sit at 8-10. However, the Sacred Heart Pioneers have an abundance of work to do as they sit at the bottom of the standings at 1-14. Stony Brook and the cold rain were not doing the Pioneers any favors as Stony Brook took down Sacred Heart 8-4 in 6 ½ innings. The game was shortened due to inclement weather. Stony Brook’s junior right-handed pitcher Tim Knesik made his fifth start on the mound today. He struggled through 1.1 innings and was relieved by Nick DiEva, who received the win with 2.2 shutout innings of relief. Sacred Heart’s six-foot nine-inch junior pitcher Connor Landers only pitched one inning and it was a sure nightmare. He was lit up by the Sea...
