This week was an especially exciting one for the New York Baseball Academy (NYBA) at Hofstra University. New Head Coach Frank Catalanotto – longtime Major League veteran who was named Head Coach of the Pride last month was the special guest at the morning clinic, I can’t imagine a better way for a young baseball player to learn than from someone of Catalanotto’s pedigree. It was a beautiful week for baseball at the New York Baseball Academy at Hofstra University. The legendary camp at been going on for over 40 years and was churning this week with a huge group of young ball players. The highest honor given out was the Axcess Player of the Week – given to a player that performed outstanding all week. The winner was Devin Lake. Division-I: St. John’s split a DH with Butler losing the first game, 4-1, but winning the second game, 9-4. In the win, the Johnnies trailed 2-0 entering the fourth inning, but Colin Wetterau tied it up with a two-run single and they took the lead on a two-run single by Chris Conniff. Marty Higgins‘ RBI single in the seventh was their 5th run and proved to be the winning run. Tim Cunningham earned the win in relief for the Johnnies. Joe Joe Rodriguez and Ethan Routzahn combined to lock down the final 2.1 IP. Brian Morrell led the offense with three hits. They will close out their regular season next weekend with a four-game series against Villanova. Division-I: St. John‘s swept Butler by the scores of 9-0 and 4-0. In Game 1, Nick Mondak was lights-out. He struck out 10 over 6.0 shutout innings, allowing just three hits and one free pass. He earned his fourth win of the season. Josh Lajoie closed it out with a scoreless seventh with two punch outs. St. John’s outhit Butler, 13-3. They scored two runs in the first inning on an RBI double by Ryan Hogan and an RBI ground out by Nick Cirelli. Carson Bartels led the offense with three hits and 4 RBI. Division-I St. John’s lost to UCONN, 4-3, to open up their weekend series. They led 3-1 in the 7th, but the Huskies scored on a squeeze to cut the deficit to two and then in the 8th, a two-run go-ahead double by Kyler Fedko (3-for-5), gave them the lead. Carson Bartels drew a walk in the 9th but they were unable to get him around to score. Austin Peterson earned his sixth win of the season. Joe Joe Rodriguez was tagged with the loss. The Johnnies had 10 hits but struck out 13 times and stranded 8 runners on base. They fell to 14-16 on the season and will play a DH today beginning at 12. Division-I: Hofstra won an absolutely wild game, 14-11, against Delaware which featured 26 hits and 14 walks between the two teams. The Pride scored those 14 runs in just two of their innings with a five-spot in the second and nine in the seventh. The go-ahead run scored as part of that 9-run inning thanks to five bases loaded walks. Rob Weissheier further broke it open with a two-run single to left. Austin Gauthier drove in five runs including a second inning grand slam and he drew one of the bases loaded walks. Will Kennedy and Aidan Larkin each had two hits as well. There was not a cloud in the sky for much of Saturday afternoon. I spent the day at LIU, but there was quality baseball all over Long Island. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: Stony Brook continued their incredible run as they swept a DH from Hartford to run their streak to eight games. In Game 1, they fell behind early, 2-0, on a two-run HR by Tremayne Cobb Jr against Brian Herrmann. The lead did not last long, though. Chris Hamilton crushed a game-tying two-run HR to right field in the third inning. Brett Paulsen gave the Seawolves a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning and they never looked back. It was Good Friday for those who celebrate, but it was also a really good friday for Stony Brook, who kept their win streak going, LIU and USMMA on an exceptionally cold April day in the northeast. Here’s how it went down: Division-I Stony Brook stayed red-hot with a double header sweep over Hartford. In Game 1, Sam Turcotte started and earned the win. Hartford was able to get out to an early 2-0 lead in the first on a sac fly and an RBI ground out to second. He settled in after that and was lights-out moving forward.
