That’s why, when Bellmore JFK head coach Mike Gattus handed the sophomore right-hander the ball in a do-or-die game three with a trip to the Nassau County finals on the line, he knew exactly what he was getting. “Derek was special today—as he’s been for us all year and in his career,” Gattus told Axcess Baseball after the game. “We had all the momentum possible after game two, and he carried it on.” Yormack delivered 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out ...
by Max Edelman FINAL: Bellmore 14 – Calhoun 13 A miracle Calhoun rally falls short at the plate, as catcher Derek Fong makes an incredible tag to end the game. Bellmore moves to 6-0 in league play and extends their win streak to 7. pic.twitter.com/09kfvitZAd — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 17, 2025 In a game that featured 27 runs, 26 hits and four total home runs, the Bellmore JFK Cougars took down the Calhoun Colts 14-13, the final out was recorded on a play at the plate. Entering the top of the seventh inning down 14-6, the Colts stormed back, scoring seven seventh inning runs. With two on and two out, pitcher Cenzo Caravello’s pitch got past catcher Derek Fong. With what would have been the game tying run sprinting home, Fong was able to regather the ball and make a s...
Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s series by Max Edelman Entering his seventh season as head coach of the Bellmore JFK Cougars, Mike Gattus brings a team loaded with talent into the 2025 season. After a season where the Cougars were able to win their league championship, they fell just short of their ultimate goal, losing in the county finals. “Last season we were the Conference AA III champs.” Gattus said. “We won the conference and earned the two seed in the Nassau County Playoffs. We beat Manhasset in the quarterfinals and then defeated Carey in the semifinals in a great three game series. But then lost to Division in the county finals.” Although the team fell short, only three members of the Bellmore JFK 2024 team graduated, with Jack Fi...
by Tucker Terranova (Photo: Catherine Scarantino) Matt Bolton takes us through what worked for him at the plate in a big win for Division pic.twitter.com/7Ne7PxPh3Z — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 25, 2024 Game 2 of our coverage of the Nassau County Championships featured a AA slugfest between No. 6 Division and No. 2 Bellmore JFK. How they got here: After finishing as the No. 6 seed, Division entered the playoffs with a chip on their shoulder, determined to prove doubters wrong and continue their run as one of the league’s dominant forces. They’ve done just that, getting hot at the right time and going 5-0 while scoring 47 runs in those games. For Kennedy, they’ve enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history. They faced off against two gritty opponents, Manhasset and Carey...
It’s hard not to be optimistic about the direction of Bellmore JFK baseball following an incredible finish to their 2023 season in which they recorded their highest win total (13-7-1) since their Nassau Class A County Finals appearance in 2016 under coach Eric Passman. Mike Gattus, who took over in the Spring of 2019, has built the program back up to being a contender. After getting swept in their first series last year against Garden City, they showed resilience – first taking two of three against a strong South Side team, before rattling off 9 conference wins in a row. Ultimately, they finished with a playoff loss against Bethpage which ended their season, but they did have a taste of postseason success as they defeated Long Beach. They graduated 8 seniors from last year̵...
by James Ryder #Duke commit Ryan Yormack (‘27, NY) went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Consistent performer on the offensive end, creates tons of strength at impact. Plenty of intrigue as a power hitter. #NEFallWS @PG_Scouting pic.twitter.com/hH5PHE3ROE — PG Mid Atlantic (NY, NJ, PA, MD,DE,DC) (@PGMidAtlantic) October 28, 2023 The Showtime Select and East Coast Lumberjacks met on Field 2 at Lasorda Legacy Park Saturday afternoon as a part of the 2023 15U PG Northeast Fall World Series Tournament. This pool play matchup began at 12:40 and barely lasted an hour and a half, as the Select dominated in such fantastic fashion that the game was cut short after just 3 innings of play. The final score was 24-0. The majority of Showtime’s runs came in the top of the first inning. Their lineup was 11 ba...
