Postgame interview with JJ Palumbo who went 3-for-4 with the go-ahead 2-R double in the 3-1 victory for Clarke pic.twitter.com/Rn6rnlCJtW — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 29, 2022 Sometimes when you face an ace, you have to tip your cap and hope to bounce back the next day. Other times, you can overcame a late game deficit with a clutch, two-run double to steal a playoff game and go up 1-0 in a best-of-three. Fortunately for the Clarke Rams, it was the latter. They were trailing 1-0 against Calhoun with ace and Diamond Award favorite Brian Chin on the mound. After squandering plenty of opportunities throughout the game including getting a runner thrown out at the plate in the 1st inning, they were able to pull through in a big way in the sixth inning. Designated hitter JJ Palumbo...
Ryan Degnan struck out 14, allowing just one hit and one walk and Carey won on a walk-off infield single in the bottom of the 7th pic.twitter.com/bgpt0MdTQG — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 25, 2022 For six innings, there was virtually zero offense. And then the game really started. Carey’s Ryan Degnan and Calhoun’s Brian Chin were locked in an epic pitcher’s duel that featured dueling no-hitters with a combined 21 strikeouts through six innings. Neither pitcher would blink. Chin did it himself in the top of the seventh inning. He led off with a double to left field in which the throw by left fielder Jayden Gigante beat him, but he was able to slide under the tag to get himself into scoring position to start the inning. The next batter, Charlie Imhof, bunted h...
By Michael Malaszczyk CALHOUN IS HEADING TO THE NASSAU CONFERENCE II FINALS pic.twitter.com/Ezs8uDbiDv — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 14, 2021 Coach Art Canestro of Calhoun High School is getting right down to business this year. Calhoun had a very strong season in 2021, finishing with a 17-4 record (15-1 regular season). They came just short of glory when they lost to Garden City in the County Championship. Canestro, while critical of how this occurred, is staying positive about this experience and is striving to overturn that result this year. “Last year we had a ton of kids that could fill up the strike zone and get outs,” said Canestro. “This year we virtually return everyone now with experience. Our pitching is going to be much better.” Despite this positivity about the...
What a wild day of baseball it was. Walk-offs, game-tying grand slams, lights-out relief performances and yes, even some fan ejections. Yesterday had it all. Here’s a breakdown of the double header between Mepham and Calhoun. Mepham had taken Game 1 on Saturday and they did not play on Sunday due to prom so it was a 10:30am start yesterday. Mepham had ace Tyler O’Neill on the hill and Calhoun was without their stud SS, Patrick Sanchez, who was ejected on Saturday and had to serve a one-game suspension. It was one of those games where Mepham felt like they were going to run away with it – but just didn’t get the big hit. In the second inning, Mepham opened up a 4-1 lead and had the bases loaded with one out. Calhoun coach Art Canestro made the call to take out starti...
Final: Calhoun 7, Garden City 1 WP: Matt Kalfas (CG, 4 hits, 3 BBs, 3 Ks) Timmy Mack 2 R double Patrick Sanchez: HR Babbo, Koch, Cohen and Todd all with RBI hits. Calhoun improves to 11-1 on the season. pic.twitter.com/P7Uke6njHO — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 1, 2021 On the day following the passing of legendary head coach Joe Corea, it’s only right that the Calhoun Colts bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 7-1 win over Garden City. A complete game from sophomore southpaw Matt Kalfas and two runs in the first inning was the winning ingredient. They are now 11-1 on the season and remain in first place in Nassau Conference II. Kalfas took the mound against a tough Garden City lineup that grinded their way to a 3-0 victory over Calhoun on Monday –...
Last summer, the Boys of Summer hosted a Nassau Varsity Division which featured several of the top high schools. Plainedge wound up winning the title, but they were taken to the absolute edge by Calhoun in an extra inning game in the championship. Plainedge was a senior-laden team playing with many of their 2020 graduates. Calhoun was a younger team that featured only three 2020 graduates on their roster. This bodes well for Calhoun entering 2021, as they will return the vast majority of that team. Head Coach Art Canestro, who has been at the helm since 2014, will enter the season with a team led by College of Charleston-commit Patrick Sanchez. He was named second-team Preseason All-Long Island, and has really impressed our coach since his sophomore season when he started. “From his ...
Farmingdale is onto the semifinals! FINAL: Farmingdale 8 Calhoun 1 WP – Justin Rosner (Complete game) pic.twitter.com/4sD41oRuzC — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 20, 2018 For the second time in the past ten days, Farmingdale was on the brink of elimination. Again, they came out on top. The Dalers defeated Calhoun by a score of 8-1 and secured a spot in the Class AA semifinals. When the pressure is at its climax, Justin Rosner always finds a way to stay calm. Once again, his best stuff came in an elimination game. The sophomore finished the day going the distance, allowing only one earned run while striking out nine. “Everything was working for me, my slider I like to keep them off balance to start them out and then come in hard with the fastball,” said Rosner. “Even if I’m ...
by Tony Genualdo Last season, Calhoun found themselves in unfamiliar territory as they returned to Class A. But it did not slow down the success of year’s past as they won their conference. They finished with a record of 14-7-1 and lost to Bethpage in the postseason. Coach Art Canestro says his team’s plans are no different this upcoming season as they try to live up to their high expectations. “We continue to try to be successful by doing what we always do; working hard and paying attention to details,” Canestro said. The professional experience that Canestro and assistant coach Steve DiMarco helps lead the team through what they say are “professional-type practices. “We expect our kids to work hard and buy into the system, and they do,” said Canestro. As for the talent on the team this ...
With the conclusion of the summer season typically comes a flurry of college commitments as players decide where they’d like to continue their baseball playing career and college coaches ready to solidify their next crop of incoming players. This year is no different as the passed weak has featured several players announcing their verbal commitments. Here’s how it went down. Gavin McAlonie (Miller Place) – Molloy College Quick Hit: Raised his stock significantly beginning with his 4-for-4 performance against Shoreham-Wading River back in late April when Aidan Crowley was going for his fourth consecutive no-hitter in front of a huge crowd. Since then, he proved he is an impact player every step of the way especially with his in-game performances with Body Armor. He also th...
As always, the Class A playoffs will be a roller coaster of emotions. It brings high energy, closely contested match ups and upsets. The factor that makes these playoffs so great, is that there’s 18 teams competing for the ultimate goal of a county championship. As we’ve seen in previous years, there’s been clear favorites heading into the postseason. However, this year, it’s anybody’s title to win. With that being said, let’s take a look at the Class A playoffs. Play-In Games: #18 South Side vs. #15 Island Trees For several reasons, this is a great match up. Not only do both teams have great arms, but they both struggle to hit high-end pitching. For South Side, expect Dan Kelleher to take the mound. Kelleher features a lively fastball, along with the ab...
Spring has sprung which means the varsity baseball season is officially underway. After Wantagh won their third consecutive County Championship in 2018, things are expected to be a little different in Class A this season. While there will be new teams emerging as contenders, there’s also going to be plenty of teams that come into the season with a chip on their shoulder, ready to prove they are worthy of winning. With that being said, here are the preseason power rankings for Class A. 10. Valley Stream North Competing in an extremely tough conference, Valley Stream North enters the season as “sleepers” in Conference A4. With a lineup consisting of Albany-commit Joe Gisonda and James Saracino, they can give opposing teams nightmares. They also return Chrs Manzi and Colin M...
In Class AA, Calhoun has been one of the more prominent programs as far as talent and consistency go. In 2017, they fell in the semifinals and in 2018, they were eliminated in the quarterfinals. Due to their success over the past few years and returning several impact players, all the arrows are pointing upwards towards a legitimate county championship run this year. However, there will be a change of scenery this season for the Colts. As a result of Class A expanding to 30 teams, Calhoun is one of four new teams. This means they will find themselves playing teams they are unfamiliar with, but capable of beating. They believe they can beat anybody in the newly adopted 30-team Class A. In past years, Calhoun has leaned on younger players to do most of the carrying. This season, Calhoun is l...
