13u Five Star National Wins Slugfest Against Top Tier Aviators

by Trevor Dugan

Fireman’s Field hosted a high-scoring tournament showdown Friday morning between 13u Five Star National NY and the Top Tier Aviators Red, as Five Star earned an 8-6 victory in their first game at the Bases Loaded Baseball Father’s Day Liberty Classic Qualifier.

Nine runs were scored in just the first three innings Friday as both offenses seemed locked in from the start.

Top Tier scored the game’s first run on an RBI groundout in the top of the first, then got a shutdown bottom of the frame from their starting pitcher Luca Ierano.

Following their scoreless first inning, Five Star struck for two runs in the bottom of the second. A bases-loaded walk by Patrick O’Brien tied the game at 1-1, before an RBI groundout gave Five Star a 2-1 lead.

The lead switched hands yet again in the top of the third when Top Tier put up a two-spot of their own. Catcher Peter O’Sullivan tied things at 2-2 with an RBI infield single, then came around to score two batters later on another RBI single, this one by shortstop Connor Macleod, giving Top Tier a 3-2 lead midway through the third.

The Five Star offense truly came alive in the bottom of the third. They began the inning with two singles and a walk, loading the bases for catcher Logan Schenider. The young backstop delivered a two-run double to center field, taking the lead right back for Five Star.

Next to the plate was the second baseman Caden Beiner, who launched a towering, three-run home run over the left field wall to put Five Star up 7-3 and chase Ierano from the game.

Beiner finished the day 2-3 with three RBI, earning GameChanger player of the game honors.

“Caden’s been hitting the ball really well this year and when he hits, the team hits,” Five Star head coach Dean Cannizzo said. “The kids were hyped for him, and it was enjoyable to see him round the bases for his first home run.”

Even after allowing a five-run inning, Top Tier was not about to go down easily. They pushed across three runs in the top of the fourth, scoring on an RBI infield single and two bases-loaded walks to cut the Five Star lead to just 7-6.

Unfortunately for the Aviators, their offense could not score again following their three-run fifth inning. Five Star added one more insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly, and finished off their 8-6 victory with a scoreless top of the sixth as the game ended due to time constraints.

Five Star National NY Black will return to action in the Father’s Day Liberty Classic Qualifier Saturday June 20, 6:00 P.M. against MVP East End 13u.
