Mount Sinai cruised to a 12-2 run-rule victory over Rocky Point Tuesday for their second straight win over the north shore rival Eagles.
After a quiet first two innings, Mount Sinai batted around and scored six runs in both the third and fourth innings to run away with things. Seven different Mustangs drove in runs during the offensive outburst, including four batters with multiple runs batted in.
Mount Sinai leadoff man P.J.Tubianosa went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in two runs. The junior catcher also stole two bases.
Batting right behind Tubianosa was second baseman Parker Menechino, who finished 2-2 with three runs batted in and two walks.
Mount Sinai starting pitcher Collin Morgan pitched all five innings, allowing just two runs while striking out seven. The St. Joseph’s commit is part of a strong pitching staff that the Mustangs have relied on heavily early in the season.
Sophomore Jason Hayes is a key part of that staff. He started in left field Tuesday, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and one run scored, and spoke to Axcess following the win about Mount Sinai’s pitching depth.

“We have a strong staff overall, a lot of guys that throw very hard with good stuff,” Hayes said. “We’ve been able to command the ball well early in the season, get ahead in counts and get guys out.”
Hayes also discussed Mount Sinai’s success at the plate during their 6-2 start.
“We’ve been able to grind at-bats, get ahead in counts, drive balls into gaps and get starting pitchers out of the game early,” Hayes explained. “We’ve been hitting consistently in just about every game… and just playing fundamental baseball”
Rocky Point’s starting pitcher Tyler Callahan had a strong start to this game, striking out five batters and allowing no runs over the first two innings. The senior was pulled in the third inning, however, after his allowing third bases-loaded walk of the inning.
Following the first of Mount Sinai’s two six-run innings, Rocky Point was able to get on the board in the bottom of the third. Dylan Bigbie smashed a double down the left field line to drive in two, and cut the Rocky Point lead to 6-2.
After Bigbie’s double cut Mount Sinai’s lead to four, it appeared Rocky Point may make things interesting down the stretch, but the Mustangs put that hope to rest by scoring six runs for the second straight inning in the top of the fourth.
Both Hayes and center fielder Adam Hannon had RBI singles during the big inning. Four more runs scored on bases-loaded walks and an error.
Despite the lopsided final score, the game ended in dramatic fashion. Needing to score in the bottom of the fifth to avoid a run rule defeat, Rocky Point outfielder Gavin Lamereux doubled to put himself in scoring position with two outs. Next to bat was Bigbie who smacked a single to right for his second hit of the day. Lamereux came barreling around third, attempting to score and extend the game for Rocky Point, but Mount Sinai right fielder Matt Passantino came up firing with a perfect throw to the plate, catching the Eagles’ OF for the final out and securing a 12-2 win for Mount Sinai in five innings.
Mount Sinai will go for the sweep against Rocky Point Thursday, April 23, at Mount Sinai High School.
