It is not often that a playoff team relies on an underclassmen to anchor the rotation. That is likely to be the case this year for perennial powerhouse Shoreham-Wading River, who will be leaning on sophomore southpaw Conor Dietz to pitch like an ace in 2026.
Fortunately, it won’t be a new task for the hard-throwing 10th grader.
As a freshman, he compiled a 1.70 ERA over 39 innings with 41 Ks against 17 walks. He notched a very impressive 1.05 WHIP on the season and was named All-League for his accomplishments. Additionally, he handled the bat well; batting .310 with a team-leading 10 RBIs.
Dietz, a member of the Body Armor Titans, pitched extremely well in the summer as well. He was named the MVP of the PG East Coast Elite Championship, as well as All-Tournament team in the PG New England Elite Championship and PG Northeast World Series.
This winter, he has continued to improve as his fastball velocity has increased to 88.5 MPH and has been ranked as the No. 1 southpaw pitcher in the 2028 class in NY.
His pitching coach, Ryan Horstman, had the following to say:
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Conor over the past three years. During that time, he has developed from sitting 75 MPH to topping out at 88.5 MPH on his fastball. His fastball and changeup both generate elite levels of arm side run, allowing him to consistently miss bats at a high rate. Conor is extremely projectable with a very high ceiling. Beyond his physical tools and on-field performance, his work ethic and confidence truly set him apart. He is committed to his development and embraces the process every single day. Do not be surprised if, by this fall, he earns a scholarship from a power five program.”
He spoke with Axcess Baseball and here’s what he had to say…
