Friday College Recap Powered by Orlin & Cohen

By Anthony DiCocco

With the second weekend of college baseball underway, Adelphi and Queens kicked off their 2026 seasons. Let’s see how they and some of the other local teams in the area fared on Friday.

Division I:

Game 1: Stony Brook 5, Georgia Tech 14

Game 2: Stony Brook 5, Georgia Tech 10 F/7

Despite being down 3-1 heading into the fifth inning, a single and hit-by-pitch set the stage for Johnny Pilla to deliver a go-head, three-run homer.

However, Georgia Tech stormed right back in the bottom of the frame. Following a leadoff walk, Ty Panariello immediately served up a two-run blast to Alex Hernandez to put the Yellow Jackets back in front.

Will Baker then notched a two-out double to keep the inning alive before Drew Rogers touched them all with Georgia Tech’s second two-run shot of the inning to make it 7-4.

Chris Carson picked up a run batted in (RBI) with a double in the top of the sixth, but the Yellow Jackets posted a six spot in the bottom half to seal the game.

With the bases loaded and one out, a wild pitch by Luca Mannino scored a run. With two outs, Mannino walked another to refill the bases before Evan Kay forced in a run with another walk in relief.

During the ensuing at-bat, Carson Kerce cleared the bases with a three-run double. Immediately after, Jarren Advincula singled him home to extend Georgia Tech’s advantage to 13-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, Vahn Lackey singled home one more run to add insult to injury.

The nation’s No. 2 ranked team got the best of the Seawolves in the nightcap as well.

Stony Brook got off to a fast start, as it took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. With runners at the corners against Justin Shadek, Aidyn Coffey laid down a bunt to score a run. Later in the inning, Nicholas Dromboski sent a long double into center field two plate two more.

The lead did not last long, as the Yellow Jackets tagged Hunter Colagrande for five runs in the bottom half. Following a leadoff single, Lackey homered deep to center to bring Georgia Tech within a run.

Immediately after, Caleb Daniel and Rogers swapped places with consecutive doubles to tie the score. Kerce then gave the Yellow Jackets the lead with a triple and Advincula brought him home with a single to extend the lead to 5-3.

Caden Spivey took over for Shadek in the top of the third and the Seawolves were able to draw even against him. After Stony Brook loaded the bases, Chanz Doughty hit into a fielder’s choice to inch closer before Matt Jackson dumped a single into center field to make it 5-5.

The Seawolves hung around for a bit, but the Yellow Jackets halted the upset bid in the fifth. With Christian Martinez on the mound, Lackey led off the frame with a homer. Martinez was then yanked after issuing a free pass, but Aidan Colagrande hurled a wild pitch upon entering from the pen before coughing up an RBI double to Parker Brosius. Rogers singled him home during the ensuing at-bat.

With Rogers on first base, Kerce shot a double into right-center field, allowing Advincula to bang a single up the middle to make it 10-5.

After scoring five runs through the opening two innings, Stony Brook’s bats fell silent the rest of the way, as they recorded just two hits against Adam McKelvey, Brett Barfield and Jamie Vicens.

Pilla led the Seawolves with three RBIs, while Dromboski added two. Carson, Doughty, Jackson and Coffey tallied one each.

Kerce delivered five hits and five RBIs for Georgia Tech. Vahn went 4-for-5 with a homer, four RBIs and four walks, while Rogers went 4-for-7 with a home run and five RBIs.

Stony Brook will search for its first win of 2026 on Saturday at 3 p.m. as it continues to battle Georgia Tech.

St. John’s 1, Arizona State 9

After dealing last week, Liam O’Leary was not nearly as sharp on the bump for the Red Storm. Following a leadoff single, Dean Toigo pulled a two-run homer to right field to make it 2-0 Sun Devils in the bottom of the first.

To lead off the bottom of the fourth, Dominic Smaldino found the right field seats to make it 3-0.

Lewis Rodriguez took Cole Carlon deep in the top of the fifth to pull St. John’s closer, but Garrett Michel doubled home Smaldino in the sixth to regain the Sun Devil’s three-run lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Tommy Conley walked three batters and hit one to force in a run. Conor Burns relieved the southpaw to attempt to put the fire out, but Nu’u Contrades had other ideas, as he blasted a 400-foot grand slam to put the finishing touches on a five-run inning.

O’Leary allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk as he labored through 5 ⅔ innings. Conley recorded just two outs and was charged with four runs without giving up a hit.

Carlon posted nine strikeouts across six innings of one-run ball for Arizona State. Alex Overbay did not allow a hit in two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Rodriguez was the Johnnies lone source of offense with his homer. Jack Tate’s double was their only other extra-base hit.

Contrades and Toigo contributed four and three RBIs, respectively, while Smaldino added three hits and drove in a run.

The Red Storm and Sun Devils will square off again at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Fordham 3, UNCW 1

The Rams got off to a quick start, as they scratched across two runs against Connor Marshburn in the top of the first inning. Fordham sandwiched a walk between two singles to load the bases right off the bat, paving the way for Anthony Grabau to single a run in.

Tommy McAndrews grounded into a double play during the next at-bat, but another run crossed the plate nonetheless.

The Seahawks strung three straight singles off Beau Elson to cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the first, but that was all Elson would surrender all day. The southpaw struck out eight batters across five frames of one-run baseball while giving up six hits and walking two.

Fordham scored on a throwing error by Brady Thompson during the top of the fourth to pad its lead.

From there, the Rams bullpen took care of the rest. In four shutout frames, Declan Cawley and Aric Berg combined to strike out five batters and surrendered just one hit.

At the dish, Grabau was Fordham’s top performer, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk. JP Pennella went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and a walk for UNCW while Trevor Lucas picked up the lone RBI.

Marshburn failed to match Elson, as he coughed up three runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks while punching out five Rams across four innings.

Fordham and UNCW will continue their three-game series at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

LIU 0, Jacksonville 12

In the second inning, Jacksonville put up three runs against Nicholas Finarelli. Though Finarelli kept the score at 3-0 through 4 ⅔ innings, LIU’s offense never came around against left-hander Alex Walsh and the Sharks’ bullpen ultimately melted down.

During the bottom of the sixth, Gavin Sansone served up a solo shot to Conner Spelman before Sammy Mummau crushed a two-run bomb two batters later. With two outs, Sansone walked a batter and allowed a single, putting ducks on the pond for Derek Bermudez, who blasted a three-run homer to make it 9-0 Dolphins.

Sansone was pulled after allowing three homers in the frame, but Lawrence Elinson struggled in relief and his defense did not help matters. Following a walk, Mike Polubinski committed an error in left field to score another run and prolong the inning. Spelman then doubled home another run before Logan Baratta delivered an RBI single for good measure, capping off a nine-run inning.

Though his offense’s performance overshadowed him a bit, Walsh was excellent. Through five scoreless innings, Walsh punched out two Sharks while allowing two hits and plunking a batter.

Nick Matson and Ryan Rivera picked up LIU’s lone two hits in the defeat.

The Sharks will get another crack at taking down the Dolphins on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Division II:

Game 1: Adelphi 9, Felician 21 F/7

Game 2: Felician 6, Adelphi 5

After Johnny Catuosco got the Panthers going with a solo shot in the first, the walls quickly caved in on Adelphi.

John Carver struggled with his command to begin the bottom of the inning, walking two batters and hitting one. Nonetheless, he induced a double play off Bryce Curry’s bat to create a path out of the first while only allowing one run.

However, Felician had other ideas, as Rocko Brzezniak singled home another run before Andrew DeAngelis notched another single to keep the inning alive. With two on, Ernesto Polanco cracked a three-run bomb to center to make it 5-1.

In the bottom of the second, Carver allowed a walk and single before Luis De La Cruz deposited another pitch over the center-field fence to chase Carver from the game with another three-run homer.

From the bullpen, Eric Ressegger was rudely welcomed by a Curry solo shot. Soon after, Polanco singled home another run to cap off the Golden Falcons second straight five-run inning to start the game.

In the middle innings, Catuosco racked up three RBIs and Erick Duignan hit a two-run home run to try to get Adelphi back into the game.

However, Brzezniak and Curry had other ideas. Against the Panthers’ bullpen, Brzezniak hit a pair of two-run homers before completing the hat trick with a solo shot. Curry also logged a roundtripper after doubling home Jose David Medrano, who cracked a three-run homer of his own later on.

In the second half of the doubleheader, the Panthers lost a heartbreaker.

After working a clean first two innings, Jake Sekinski surrendered solo homers to De La Cruz and Curry in the top of the third. However, the Panthers worked a pair of walks against Andrew Gendi in the bottom of the third, allowing Giancarlo Rengifo to flip the score with a three-run home run.

Nonetheless, some usual suspects came back to haunt Adelphi two innings later. Following an error, De La Cruz and Brzezniak crushed back-to-back homers to left to put the Golden Falcons back in front 5-3.

The Panthers got even immediately, as Gendi hurled a wild pitch in the bottom of the frame to score Anthony Rigogliosi from third base. Rengifo then picked up a double to put the tying run in scoring position, and two batters later, Bryan McClearly singled him in with Rafael Solano on in relief.

The score remained deadlocked at 5-5 until the ninth. After combining with Colin Richardson to keep Felician at bay for 3 ⅓ innings, Michael Tufo faltered, as Thomas Iaquinto sent a go-ahead homer into the left field seats to lead off the inning.

In the bottom of the stanza, Matt Ryan doubled to give the Panthers a glimmer of hope, but Gavin Enright, who pitched three scoreless innings out of the pen, shut the door to earn the win.

In game two, Rengifo went 3-for-4 with a double, homer, three RBIs and two runs scored. During the opener, Catuosco went 4-for-5 with a homer, four RBIs and two runs.

Brzezniak was a force across both games for Felician, going 6-for-9 with four bombs, eight RBIs, five runs and a walk. Curry and De La Cruz went yard three times each with four and six RBIs, respectively.

Adelphi will continue the Northeast Challenge in Myrtle Beach, S.C. at noon on Saturday with a matchup against Queens.

Game 1: Bridgeport 2, Molloy 10

Game 2: Molloy 4, Bridgeport 6 F/7

With the score tied at one apiece in the second inning, Molloy blew the game open. After walking the leadoff batter, James Ackerman was taken deep by Joe Burriesci for a two-run blow.

Ackerman lost the strike zone from there, as four of the next five Lions reached base via three walks and a hit-by-pitch to force in a run. Jacob Skinner relieved Ackerman with the bases full and issued another free pass before serving up a two-run single to Jack Coogan.

Sean Sarrano plated two more runs in the following frame to make it 9-1 Molloy.

On the mound, James Sill made easy work of the Purple Knights. The right-hander allowed a pair of unearned runs on five hits while striking out eight batters across six innings.

Molloy did not fare nearly as well in game two. After the first two batters reached base against Sean Mileti in the bottom of the second, Andrew Sinclair and Ryan Baldwin picked up back-to-back RBI singles to make it 2-0 Purple Knights.

A fielder’s choice by JJ O’Connor brought in another run immediately after before Raymond Morales doubled home one more to finish off a four-run frame.

The Lions got a run back in the top of the third, but Anthony Armenia ripped a two-run shot to left to wash it away and then some.

In the fifth, Molloy’s Mike Sweeney cashed in two runs with a single and Serrano followed with an RBI triple off Christian Walsh to pull the Lions within two runs.

Nonetheless, Tyler Hodella was nearly perfect in relief from that point on. The right-hander earned a nine-out save, as he struck out five Lions and walked one through his three scoreless and hitless innings.

Sweeney went 4-for-8 with two RBIs, three runs scored, a steal and a hit-by-pitch through both legs of the doubleheader. Serrano was also dangerous, going 4-for-7 with a double, a triple, five RBIs, a run, a walk, two steals and a hit-by-pitch.

Sean Welsh went 4-for-6 with a homer, two RBIs, two runs, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Coogan and Burriesci drove in two runs apiece, while Steve Mulqueen brought in one.

The Lions, who are also participating in the Northeast Challenge, will take on Franklin Pierce at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Game 1: SNHU 18, Queens 12

Game 2: Queens 2, SNHU 16 F/7

After trading blows through the first two innings in the opener, Queens took the lead in the bottom of the third. While down 6-5, John Harkins laced an RBI single into left field to tie the game before Vincent Mallon brought home the leading run on a fielder’s choice.

However, the Penmen exploded for nine runs in the top of the fourth. Michael Vilardi surrendered three straight hits to lead off the inning as SNHU tied the score.

With two on and two out, Tommy Pasqua committed a throwing error to plate two more Penmen runs and keep the inning alive. Another throwing error by Nick Piazza loaded the bases and ended Vilardi’s day soon after, prompting Christopher Naronis to enter the game and walk in three straight runs.

When Naronis finally found the strike zone, Jake Pisano slashed a bases-clearing triple into right-center field.

Queens scored four runs in the seventh to make a slight dent in the deficit, but the Penmen outscored them 3-1 in the final two innings.

Much like game one, the nightcap of the doubleheader was won by SNHU in the middle innings.’ With the score stuck at 2-1 SNHU, the Penmen scored five runs in the third before tacking on four more in the fourth.

With two on and one out in the third, Dakota Britt notched a run-scoring single. A wild pitch brought home another SNHU run before Pisano and Marc Cisco picked up RBIs off a triple and single, respectively.

Two batters later, Kyle Lavigne tacked on another with a two-out single.

In the following inning, Brody Keneston doubled home a run before Cisco drew a bases-loaded walk to force one in.

With the bases still loaded and two out, Lavigne capped off the scoring for the second consecutive inning with a two-RBI single to make it 11-1.

After the Knights scratched a run across in the top of the fifth, the Penmen responded with two in the bottom half and added three more in the sixth.

Harkins went 4-for-5 with an RBI in the opener, while Niko Sorice and Peter Bounougias drove in three runs apiece. Mallon brought two runners home. Queens tallied six hits in the second leg of the set after notching 18 in the opener.

Peter Nenadich III allowed nine runs (seven earned) across 3 ⅓ innings in game two while Matt Rosenberg allowed seven in 2 ⅔. Each gave up seven hits. Vilardi surrendered 12 runs (seven earned) on 13 hits across 3 ⅔ innings in the opener, but recorded an RBI in game two.

Pisano totaled eight RBIs across both games for the Penmen, while Britt racked up five.

In game two, SNHU’s Jake Lapham went six innings, pitching to two runs, six hits, two walks, a hit-by-pitch and nine strikeouts.

Queens and Adelphi clash on Saturday at noon, with each seeking its first win of the season.
