Editor’s Note: This is the fifth installment of the 2025 Up Next Series in which we highlight the top underclassmen on Long Island. Previously, we highlighted Jack Mulligan, Alex Pagano, Quincy Gibbs and Michael Cotto. Special thanks to Ken Kortright State Farm for sponsoring this year’s series.)

Every teenager wants to have fun on their birthday. That would usually include a day with their friends or maybe going to their favorite restaurant.

Center Moriches 9th grader Charlie Edwards had a 14th birthday so good that it was perfect – he fired a perfect game in the Northeast Elite tournament for MVP East End.

He put up a monster season for them in 2025. He was named to 4 PG All-Tournament teams. He pitched 59 innings with 90 Ks and a 2.86 ERA. At the dish he was just as dominant – batting .448 with a robust 1.122 OPS, 52 hits and 37 RBIs.

His pitching coach, former big leaguer Bill Pulsipher had the following to say:

“Charlie is a very coachable young man with a bright future ahead of him. He is a big kid for his age with more room for growth. He has a live arm and has been up to 82 MPH as an eighth grader last year. Charlie also has a good feel for his breaking ball for a young pitcher. I’m excited to see what he can do over the next 4 years. Center Moriches has yet another good arm to add to their arsenal and continue the tradition of top level local high school pitchers.”

Speaking of his high school, his coach Paul Gibson, added that since Charlie was in middle school last year, their options were calling him up to varsity or playing middle school. With his level of talent, they viewed it more important that he gets reps at the higher level.

“He knew going in that there wouldn’t be a ton of playing time, but embraced the idea of working hard at practice every day and getting valuable experience being part of a strong varsity team. Early on, he was nervous at practice. But he showed really good maturity by not letting some struggles get to him and just continued to work. I’d say about 4 weeks into the season he really started to look comfortable being on the field with older players and he started to show the type of talent he is. Athletically, he really checks a lot of boxes. He’s a big strong kid. On the mound, he’s already into the 80s with a nasty hook. At the plate, he has power to all fields and really disciplined approach. What really stands out about him is the type of kid he is. He just is one of the genuinely most likable and restful kids I’ve worked with. Despite al the other positive attributes and talents he has as a player, his love for the game is what I believe will drive him to doing great things.”

I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say…

Was baseball always your No. 1 sport? Do you play any other sports?

Yes, baseball has always been my favorite sport. I started playing at age six and haven’ stopped. In addition to baseball, I also play basketball and golf.

Any family members that played pro or college sports?

My grandpa played basketball at UConn and two of my aunts played college softball. One was a catcher at Springfield College an the other was a pitcher at Dominican College.

Who are some people that have had a positive influence on your career?

Both of my parents have positively influenced my baseball career. My dad is the one who first introduced me to the game of baseball. He has shared so much of his knowledge with me over the years. My mom always supports me and pushes me to be the best version of myself.

Do you take private lessons from any instructors?

Yes, I spend a lot of time at 365 Athletics! I hit with Marc Wangenstein and I pitch with Bill Pulsipher. In addition, I’m in my 4th year of the Pitching Project where I work with Mike Demarest and Mike O’Reilly.

How have you enjoyed your time with MVP East End?

I have enjoyed playing with MVP East End. I really like the coaching staff. Coach Joe Esposito is my head coach. He’s been around the game for a long time. He’s improved my baseball knowledge and is just a cool guy to be around. I also like when I have the opportunity to play up and work with Coach Rich Roberts. I’ve known him for a long time and I feel like he’s always rooting for me. I also appreciate Coach Paul Gibson for giving me a lot of the opportunities I’ve had to play at different levels within the organization.

What are you looking to work on this offseason?

I’m always looking to get faster and stronger. Pitching, I’d like to gain a little more velocity but more importantly, I’d like to fine-tune my command. I’d also really like to develop my change up. Offensively, I’d like to add more power and really get my mechanics in the best shape possible for the spring season.

What are your goals for 2026?

Consistency is my goal for 2026. Both at the plate and on the mound.

The biggest thrill I’ve had on a baseball field came this past October when I threw a perfect game on my 14th birthday. It also feels really good to hit a home run.
