(Editor’s Note: This is the first installment of the 2025 Up Next Series in which we highlight the top underclassmen on Long Island. Special thanks to Ken Kortright State Farm Agency for sponsoring this year’s series.)
When Massapequa closed out winning the Nassau County AAA Championship in Game 3 over Farmingdale, they did so in a way that differed from their typical fashion.
The Chiefs, one of the true baseball powerhouses on Long Island, are generally very upperclass heavy. And while they certainly had their share of seniors – they did have the Diamond Award winner (Thomas Harding) after all, it was a freshman that closed out the last five outs.

That freshman, Jack Mulligan, pitched 21.1 innings on the season, allowed 19 hits and struck out 24 batters with a 2.62 ERA.
The hard-throwing RHP made two starts on the season and will certainly be a big part of their future. He continued to excel this summer for the Body Armor Titans, finishing with 56 strikeouts over 52 innings with a 2.50 ERA for the year. His fastball was up to 89 MPH and he was named Most Valuable Pitcher in 3 different tournaments.

His pitching coach, Rob Cafiero, spoke very highly of him:
“I have been working with Jack for a number of years now. He has made great strides over the last few years on the mound, however, he has a tremendous God-given ability. Jack is a hard-working young man who is a three-sport varsity athlete with that classic farm boy look. He’s got a bright future with a really high ceiling. He threw meaningful innings for the Chiefs last season. Making multiple starts and a number of bullpen appearances. He recorded the last out in the County Championship game against Farmingdale. Jack is a terrific teammate and comes from a great family. He’s always willing to learn and is constantly working hard to get better.”
I had a chance to speak with Jack and here’s what he had to say…
Jack Mulligan (Massapequa 2028) was nothing short of spectacular on the mound today, striking out four of the six batters he faced.
Standing 6’3 at just 15 years old, Mulligan’s fastball was topping out at 88 MPH. He has an effective low-70s curveball to keep hitters off… pic.twitter.com/cP4b6MnkL4

Who are some people who have had a positive impact on you?
People who have had a positive impact on my career and life are definitely my parents. They sacrifice so much time and money into helping me get better and are so supportive. I truly feel that I wouldn’t be where I am today without their help.
How are you able to balance the rigorous schedules of playing varsity baseball and football?
Playing both takes a lot, but I’ve learned to balance them. Football builds toughness and a strong sense of team and family, while baseball sharpens focus and discipline. They push me in different ways, but my goal is to play baseball in college.
Do you work with any private instructors?
I work with Rob Cafiero for hitting and pitching. But I do an offseason pitching program called Performance Pitching, nicknamed P3.
What was it like playing varsity as a freshman at Massapequa? They typically do not call up freshman.
Playing varsity as a freshman was a great experience. Massapequa doesn’t usually bring up freshmen, so I was grateful to get the opportunity. and learn the ropes early. It was definitely something I worked for, and the older guys helped me out a lot and made me feel comfortable right away.
Best baseball trip you’ve been on?
Probably Cooperstown. That trip was unforgettable just being around my teammates all week, playing nonstop baseball, trading pins and hanging out at the fields al day. The atmosphere there is different.
Favorite professional athlete?
My favorite professional athlete is Gerrit Cole. I love how he is dominant on the mound, works insanely hard and is a great leader. He’s confident but to flashy, letting his pitching speak for itself.
What would you like to work on this offseason?
Next year, I want to get better with offspeed pitches, build arm strength, be a leader on the team, receive a Div-I offer and hit 92 MPH.
Favorite musical artist?
Definitely Drake because he can match any mood in his music from hype and confident to chill and relaxed.
Favorite app on your phone?
My favorite app is Snapchat because I can stay connected with friends.
Favorite restaurant on Long Island?
I love Smuggler Jack’s for the amazing waterfront views and delicious food.
Favorite TV show?
The best TV show I have watched is Dexter. Best storyline and plot and awesome acting.
Favorite vacation spot?
I love Aruba for its beaches and fun activities. It’s the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure.
Dream Car?
My dream car is the Camaro SS because it’s powerful and looks really good; just a bold presence.
