Saturday marked the second day of the Perfect Game Northeast Fall World Series. 15u Five Star National NY and the LI Storm Select met at Firemen’s Field for their first game of the tournament, trading lead changes until the very last inning.
Both starting pitchers put together solid performances in this 15u matchup, with Chris Schor from Kings Park High School starting for Five Star and pitching into the sixth inning, and John Hammer from Xavier High School pitching until the seventh for the Storm.
Hammer took the mound for the Storm in the top of the first and shut down the Five Star bats right away. The Storm were able to score the first run of the game in the bottom of the first after a walk and subsequent error, giving them a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Their narrow lead did not last long however, as Five Star answered with two runs in the top of the second. Back-to-back walks began the inning for Five Star, then both runners were bunted into scoring position .Christian Canale of Sachem East High School was next to hit, and came through with a two run single to put Five Star on top 2-1.
Five Star SP Schor bounced back in the bottom of the second, allowing just one baserunner on a leadoff single before retiring the rest of the Storm batters in order for a shutdown inning. Hammer would answer in the top of the third however and pitch a scoreless inning of his own, making quick work of the bottom of the Five Star order to send the Storm offense right back to the plate.
The Storm threatened again in the bottom of the third as Demitri Zeailli led off with a walk to put himself on base as the tying run, but Schor got the next two batters to line out to keep the score at 2-1. The final two outs of the inning came on a line drive to right field off the bat of John Hammer. As Hammer’s line drive was snagged, the Storm runner from first was caught too far off the bag, ending the Storm scoring chance as quickly as it began.
In the top of the fourth inning, Five Star was able to add to their lead thanks to a pair of RBI singles. Hammer retired the first two batters of the inning with a flyout and popout, but Brayden Grill was able to get on base with a two out single. Next to bat was SP Schor, who helped himself with an RBI single to push his lead to 3-1. Schor moved up to second on a passed ball and was driven home by Carmelo Castro of Newfield High School, who laced an RBI single to center field to give Five Star a 4-1 lead midway through the fourth.
After extending his lead with some timely hitting, Schor came back out for the bottom of the fourth and pitched his best inning of the day for Five Star. He retired the Storm bats in order, striking out the first batter of the inning and forcing the last to pop out. Schor would finish his outing with six total strikeouts.
Hammer was able to answer Schor with a 1-2-3 inning of his own in the top of the fifth. The young right hander struck out the first two batters of the inning, then forced a groundout to end it, keeping the score at 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, where the Storm offense would finally break through against Schor.
In their next turn at bat, the Storm put two runners on with one out thanks to an error and a walk. They were able to score their first run since the first inning thanks to another error in their next at-bat. Next to the plate was Chase Kwan, and another run came into score during his at-bat on a passed ball to bring the Storm within one run. Kwan then chopped a ball down the first base line, and the runner from the third base broke for the plate. The throw home by the Five Star infield missed the catcher, allowing the Storm to tie things up at 4-4.
In the top of the sixth, Hammer delivered a shutdown inning for the Storm by retiring the Five Star bats in order for the second straight time, keeping the momentum on his team’s side. He was pitching to contact in the sixth, forcing a groundout and two flyouts to send the Storm bats right back to the plate for a chance to take the lead.
After an out to begin the bottom of the sixth, the Storm loaded the bases with a walk, error and single. This brought Justin Murray of Molloy High School to the plate, and the lefty came through with an RBI single to put the Storm on top 5-4 in the late stages. The Storm would add one more run in the inning by scoring on a booted ground ball by the Five Star infield. Carmelo Castro would enter to pitch in relief of Shor at this point, and struck out the last batter of the inning to send it to the seventh.
Chasing two runs, the Five Star offense was able to put together a huge seventh inning to take back the lead. Eli Cousidine and Brayden Grill began the inning with back-to-back singles to put the tying runs on base. The pair were bunted over on a sacrifice by Chris Schor, and were driven home on two straight RBI singles by Carmelo Castro and Jackson Pale. Next to bat was Christian Canale, who came through with a clutch suicide squeeze to give Five Star a 7-6 lead and record his third RBI of the afternoon. Five Star would add two more runs to their lead in the seventh thanks to a two run single by Mike Fredericks, taking a 9-6 lead into the final half inning.
Carmelo Castro came back out for the save opportunity in the bottom of the seventh and found himself in a bit of trouble. After a leadoff groundout, two walks and a single loaded the bases for the Storm to bring the go ahead run to the plate. Facing the prospect of a blown save, Castro was able to lock in and strikeout the next batter, then recorded the final out on a popout to shortstop.
In a game that featured four lead changes, Five Star was able to battle back and hold on for their first win of the Perfect Game Northeast Fall World Series. The 15u squad received strong performances from SP Chris Schor, who pitched into the sixth, as well as Carmelo Castro, who delivered on both sides of the ball by recording a four out save and driving in two runs.

Five Star National NY 2027 got the win Saturday evening at Lasorda Legacy Park in their first game of the Perfect Game Northeast Fall World Series against Willis Otanez Baseball Academy. A six run first inning made the difference for Five Star, as they earned a 9-5 victory.
Five Star also received a strong performance from SP Logan DeLorenzo of Miller Place High School, who took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and recorded eight strikeouts.
DeLorenzo impressed right out of the gate for Five Star, striking out the first two batters of the game and pitching a 1-2-3 top of the first. His offense quickly gave him an early lead, with a six spot in the bottom of the first. After Aidan Dobrie led the game off with a walk, he was driven home on an RBI triple by Cameron Keegel of Northport High School. Keegel would then beat a throw home to score on a groundball to SS by Justin Famighetti from Smithtown East High School.
After Famightetti’s RBI, a pair of walks loaded the bases for Joey Lupinacci, who was hit by a pitch to make it 3-0. Another run came in on a bases loaded walk by Matthew Johnson, which prompted the Otanez Academy to make a pitching change. Miles Jimenez entered in relief of SP Damyan Ortega, and promptly surrendered a two run infield single to make it 6-0 Five Star before recording the final out of the 40 minute first inning with a strikeout.
DeLorenzo came back out for Five Star in the top of the second after a long wait and pitched another scoreless inning. He forced a groundout from the first batter, then walked the next to give Otanez their first baserunner. The LHP immediately picked the runner off at first base, then finished the inning with a strikeout to send his offense back to work.
Things went much better for Otanez Academy in the bottom of the second, as Jimenez pitched a 1-2-3 inning to settle things down after a disastrous first. The reliever forced a flyout, lineout, and groundout to quickly retire the side. But Five Star’s lefty ace continued dealing in the top of the third inning, racking up three more strikeouts to bring his total to six through three scoreless innings. The only baserunner of the frame reached on a walk, and did not make it past first base.
The Otanez bullpen continued to look sharp in the bottom of the third. Jimenez recorded the first two outs with a strikeout and popout, then was replaced by LHP Sebastian Rodriguez. The lefty gave up an infield single to his first batter faced, but nullified it with a strikeout to keep the score at 6-0.
In the top of the fourth , the Otanez offense finally broke through for their first hit of the game off of DeLorenzo. After a popout to begin the inning, Avien Nunez walked, then DeLorenzo picked up his seventh strikeout. With two outs, Jason Espinal came to the plate and broke up the no-hitter with a single into left field. DeLorenzo worked around the pair of base runners by forcing a groundout to end the inning and keep his shutout intact.
It was another long inning in the bottom of the fourth as the Five Star offense added three more runs to their already sizable lead. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases for Five Star to begin the frame. This prompted the Otanez Academy to make another pitching change, bringing in Jason Espinal in relief of Rodriguez. He was greeted out of the pen by Dan Keegel, who smashed a ball deep into the left-center field gap for a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0 Five Star. Espinal then forced a chopper in front of the plate to record the second out of the inning, then Justin Famighetti came through with a ground rule double to drive in two runs, picking up his second and third RBI of the day and pushing the Five Star lead to 9-0.
Facing the time limit as well as a huge deficit in the top of the fifth, the Otanez Academy was going to need a miraculous inning if they wanted to come back. They were able to make a valiant effort of it, chasing DeLorenzo from the game and putting up five runs in the final frame. An error and a pair of walks loaded the bases for them to begin the inning. DeLorenzo got his eighth strikeout for the first out, then surrendered his third walk of the inning to give the Otanez Academy their first run of the game.
DeLorenzo was then replaced by Matthew Johnson of Connetquot High School. Entering with the bases loaded, Johnson had his work cut out for him. He struck out the first batter he faced, and next to the plate was Otanez leadoff man Luiyi Martinez. The hard hitting righty ripped a line drive into the gap, plating all three runners for an RBI triple, and was able to score himself after the throw to third base got away. Officially scored as a triple and an error, Martinez had plated four runs with one swing of the bat to make it 9-5.
The next batter was hit by a pitch, but was caught stealing on a great throw by catcher Dan Keegel of Northport High School to stop the rally in its tracks. The game ended after the top of the fifth due to the time limit, as Five Star 2027 earned a 9-5 victory in their first game of the Perfect Game Northeast Fall World Series.
Justin Famighetti had a great day at the plate for Five Star, going 2-3 with a double, three RBI and a stolen base. Leadoff man Aidan Dobrie walked twice and scored two runs, adding a stolen base in the process.
