Tyler Barone Fires CG for TD Panthers in PG Northeast Fall World Series

by Trevor Dugan

The 16u TD Panthers defeated USG NY on Friday night at Medford Athletic Complex. The two ball clubs have met in multiple tournaments in 2025, and the Panthers earned another victory Friday on the back of a complete game by SP Tyler Barone.

2028 Newfield graduate Barone looked sharp from the very beginning for the Panthers. He retired the first two batters he faced in the top of the first. After allowing a single to the USG three hitter Evan Frangas, Barone picked him off to end the inning and send the TD bats to work.

The Panthers were able to jump out to a lead right away in the bottom of the first., Brandon Navratil of Newfield High School led the frame off with a double, then moved to third base on a passed ball. Fellow Newfield student Peyton Chavez was next to bat and drove Brandon home to give the Panthers an early 1-0 lead.

Barone kept it going in the top of the second, delivering a shutdown inning and continuing his scoreless outing. After a leadoff groundout, Barone allowed a single. The next batter lined a ball to left field, and the ball was dropped on a diving effort by the Panthers’ left fielder. The USG runner from first, thinking it was caught, retreated to first base and was thrown out by the Panthers’ left fielder to record the second out. Barone registered a strikeout for the final out of the inning to keep the score at 1-0.

Another run came across for the Panthers in the bottom of the second. Romeo Rivas drew a walk with one out in the frame, then moved to second base on an errant pickoff throw by USG SP Logan Wien. Rivas was then driven in on an RBI single by Joe Giglio of Commack High School to put the Panthers up 2-0.

It was more of the same for Barone in the top of the third. The Panthers’ right hander tossed a 1-2-3 inning and racked up two more strikeouts in the process, one to begin the inning and one to end it. Through three scoreless innings Barone had registered four strikeouts.

The Panthers kept adding to their run total in the bottom of the third. Wien began the inning with a strikeout, but then surrendered a double to the last batter in the Panthers’ order, Anthony Grippi of Newfield High School. The next man up was leadoff batter Brandon Navratil, who walked, prompting USG to bring in Anthony Romano to relieve their SP. The USG infield didn’t do their relief pitcher any favors, allowing three runs to score on back-to-back errors before Romano finally ended the inning by picking off a runner at first base. The Panthers took a 5-0 lead into the fourth inning.

The fourth inning was a quiet reprieve from the hecticness of the first three innings. Barone continued to cruise for the Panthers, pitching a 1-2-3 shutdown top of the fourth. USG threw a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the frame as well, with Romano recording the first two outs via strikeout before being replaced by Zach Mezrahi of JFK Bellmore High School, who finished off the frame with a strikeout of his own.

USG finally broke through with their first run in the top of the fifth. A leadoff single gave USG a baserunner right away, but a subsequent strikeout and flyout threatened to strand the runner on base. A double by Jadiel Adames of West Babylon High School put two runners in scoring position, then Jeremy Rossi hit a groundball to the Panthers’ third baseman whose throw was mishandled by first baseman Anthony Grippi, allowing USG’s first run to score and trim the Panthers’ lead to 5-1.

Mezrahi came back out to take the mound for USG in the bottom of the fifth and picked up right where he left off. The USG reliever registered two strikeouts in the frame and kept the score at 5-1 to give USG another chance to chip away in the top of the sixth.

USG continued to trim the Panthers’ lead in the top of the sixth thanks to back-to-back clutch hits by the top of their lineup. Dylan Bigbie led the inning off with a single, then stole second to give USG a scoring threat right away. The USG leadoff man was driven home on an RBI double off the bat of Johnny Puglissi of West Islip High School, cutting the Panthers’ lead to 5-2. Barone finished the inning without any further damage, but USG had once again drawn closer.

The Panthers got a welcome insurance run in the bottom of the sixth thanks to one of their most reliable hitters, Aydin Walker of Newfield High School. Cole Maag walked to begin the inning and put himself in scoring position by stealing second and third base. He was driven in by Panthers’ cleanup man Walker to put the Panthers up 6-2 and add to the TD lead heading into the final inning. The clutch single by Walker earned him his second RBI of the game.

Barone came back out for the top of the seventh to try and close out his complete game and give the Panthers their first win of the PG Northeast Fall World Series. Aidan McCormick led the inning off for USG with a single, and advanced to third base after a passed ball and groundout in the subsequent at bat. McCormick was driven in on an RBI groundout to cut the Panthers’ lead to 6-3, but that was all USG could muster in the final inning. Barone finished his complete game for the Panthers with seven strikeouts and just two earned runs.

The Panthers move to 1-0 in the Perfect Game Northeast Fall World Series, while USG falls to 0-1. Both teams will be back in action on Saturday.
