Titans Quattrini and Titans LoRusso Split the Northeast Elite Tournament Championship

Titans Quattrini and Titans LoRusso Split the Northeast Elite Tournament Championship

by Trevor Dugan

Body Armor Titans Quattrini and Titans LoRusso teams won their semifinal matchups Sunday afternoon in the Northeast Elite Tournament Championship hosted by Blue Chip Prospects, and elected to split the championship between themselves. Titans LoRusso’s Mason Linken and Titans Quattrini’s Shane Meehan were named co-MVPs of the weekend tournament.

Body Armor Titans Quattrini dominated in their semifinal matchup against USG. Entering the tournament playoffs as the No. 1 seed, Quattrini sent out Adelphi-commit Aidan Casey to start on the mound with a shot at the championship on the line. He dominated from the start, allowing just one run and striking out four over his four innings of work.

After a scoreless top of the first by Casey, Titans Quattrini came out swinging and put up seven runs in the bottom of the inning. They scored five runs before USG was able to record an out, with Dom Scattolino of Unionville High School ripping a two-run single, and Tyler Scarry of Division High School contributing another RBI single to the first inning flurry.

Michael Mallon of Connetquot High School replaced the USG starter before the end of the first inning, but the Titans were able to score two more runs on a bases loaded walk and an error to bring a 7-0 lead into the second.

USG was able to get a run back in the top of the second off of the vaunted LHP Casey. After a leadoff groundout, a walk gave USG their first baserunner, then Zach Aronson from Smithtown West High School smacked an RBI double to right-center field to give USG their first run of the game. Casey was able to avoid any further damage in the inning.

After the top of the second, Casey and Mallon traded two scoreless innings apiece. The huge first inning by Titans Quattrini was shaken off as Mallon was able to match Casey and keep the score at 7-1 heading into the fourth.

After another dominant frame by Casey in the top of the fourth, the Titans’ offense came back to life in the bottom half of the inning. Mallon found himself in trouble after a leadoff HBP and subsequent stolen base put a runner in scoring position with no outs. Michael Carr of Saint Anthony’s High School drove the runner in with an RBI single to extend the lead. Another HBP put two men on for Pennsylvania native Chance Flor, who came through with an RBI double to push the TItans’ lead to 10-1. Next up was Will Plunkett from Mamaroneck High School, who delivered an RBI single to drive home Flor and give Titans Quattrini an 11-1 run rule victory after just four innings.

While Titans Quattrini dominated their semifinal matchup, Titans LoRusso was locked in a tight battle with MVP 2027. Trailing 7-5 heading into the final inning, Titans LoRusso had one last chance to battle back. Down to their final out, Carter Henvey of Cold Spring Harbor High School laced a two-run single to tie the game at 7-7. Next up with a chance to walk it off was Mason Linken from Friends Academy. Linken slashed a chopper to shortstop, and was called safe on a very close call at first base, allowing the winning run to score and giving Titans LoRusso an 8-7 semifinal victory.

Both Titans teams finished the Northeast Elite Tournament undefeated after electing to share the championship. Titans Quattrini scored 42 runs over their four games, while Titans LoRusso scored 30. This shared tournament championship is another feather in the cap for one of Long Island’s most distinguished travel baseball organizations.
