On paper, you had one team with a 21-1 record and another with a 15-7 record. In reality, these teams were much closer than you would realize – and not just because they are neighboring towns on the south shore of Suffolk County.
Sayville and Bayport-Blue Point, two blue bloods of baseball on Long Island, squared off for the second time in a team. Earlier in the week, Sayville handed Bayport their first loss of the season after 21 wins. On Saturday, Sayville defeated them, 8-1, to capture their first Class A Championship since 2019.
The Golden Flashes competed in the ultra-competitive League 6, in which all 7 teams were separated by only 3.5 games entering the final week of the regular season. Bayport-Blue Point ran the table and easily won the league with an 18-0 record.

“Playing in League 6 definitely made us more battled tested,” said head coach Joe Esposito. “Any team could’ve won this tournament. We just won a few more games than we lost. It was an up-and-down season winning and losing close game after close game due to the competitiveness of the league.”
Ultimately, Sayville would not be denied as their team of experienced upperclassmen mixed with their freshman leadoff hitter, Aidan Devane, proved to be ready for the challenge.
They sent Molloy-commit Chris Spatenga to the mound against BBP’s ace RHP Cooper Fuller – who had began the season with 7 wins and a 0.00 ERA.
After the teams traded zeros in the first, Sayville’s bats went to work in the second inning, scoring four times. Brody Tellier got things going with a leadoff single to center. After a fielder’s choice erased him but allowed Tyler Brown to reach safely, Alex LaBella singled to advance Brown to third. After a strikeout was recorded for the second out, Patrick Coan ripped a two-run single to get Sayville on the board. They would add two more on a RBI singles by Kyle Messina to score Coan and Andrew Law to score Devane and it was 4-0.

Spatenga ran into trouble in the third inning. Bayport-Blue Point’s first three batters would reach base safely, and an E4 off the bat of Brendan Mattimore brought home their first run of the game. After a strikeout of Colin Most and a foul out to right field, Spatenga struck out Brady Gelling to strand the bases loaded.
Sayville added another run in the fourth inning on an RBI single to right field by Tyler Brown to score Kyle Messina to make it 5-1.

Spatenga’s day was done after 5 innings. The southpaw allowed one run (0 ER) on six hits and four walks with six strikeouts.
Tyler Brown came on in relief and he was effective, firing two shutout innings with three strikeouts and no walks to slam the door shut. Brown also had a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to break the game open.
Brown had three hits and three RBIs on the day to go along with his two shutout innings of relief.
Fuller was tagged with the loss, he went 2.1 innings with 4 ER on eight hits and a walk.
Kyle Messina also had three hits and an RBI. Shane Meehan and Brody Tellier each had two hits in the game.
Sayville is an experienced team that was able to go toe-to-toe with the best Class A schools in the county, and they now have the hardware to prove it.
“Most of our seniors have been contributing to the starting lineup since they were sophomores and we always felt the more experience, the better. We had a pretty good playoff run last year and they all have been there. We missed the finals last year by one game and this senior crew definitely stepped up and road to the occasion this year. Guys like Kyle Messina, Andrew Law, Tyler Brown…all play with a lot of heart. They were great leaders on-and-off the field and we, as a coaching staff, couldn’t be happier for them and the entire team.”
They will look to continue their run as they advance to the Class A Long Island Championship against the winner of Seaford-Wantagh on Thursday.
