GAME RECAP: Kim Twirls Gem, Frangas Shines as Plainview-Old Bethpage Cruises to 7-0 Win

GAME RECAP: Kim Twirls Gem, Frangas Shines as Plainview-Old Bethpage Cruises to 7-0 Win

by Tucker Terranova

After his offense plated two runs in their first trip to the plate, Josh Kim took back to the mound in the top of the second and ran into immediate trouble, resulting in the bases being loaded with the top of the Port Washington lineup due and two away. With an opportunity to set the tone and strand three Vikings, Kim did just that, inducing a popup to his shortstop and escaping untouched.

Kim worked in and out of trouble all afternoon, allowing 11 baserunners but never cracking. The right-hander tossed 6.2 scoreless innings, anchoring Plainview-Old Bethpage’s 7–0 win in the latter game of the Conference AAA series.

“I was able to get ahead with my fastball, and my slider and splitter were working for me,” Kim told Axcess Baseball. “When there were runners on, I was trying to stay calm and composed, using my stuff and challenging the hitters.”

Kim’s outing anchored a full-team effort, with seven of nine Hawks reaching base and all four hitters at the bottom of the lineup collecting hits. Plainview Old-Bethpage’s production came not just top to bottom, but across grade levels.

Freshman Evan Frangas, featured in our Up Next series this past January, showed why he’s one of Long Island’s most dynamic underclassmen, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

“Evan has been great for us all year, even as a freshman,” Kim said. “He’s hitting around .500, comes through every game, and we really rely on him.”

Frangas rewarded the team’s trust early, ripping an RBI double off the center-field fence in the first and later scoring on a groundout.

He made his presence felt defensively, too, laying out for a highlight-reel catch in left with a runner on third and two outs to preserve the shutout through three.

Frangas’ run-saving catch set the tone for a big inning, as Plainview Old-Bethpage sent eight batters to the plate and tacked on two more runs for their right-hander.

SUNY Oneonta commit Ryan Buckhardt sparked the rally with a double down the left-field line and scored on Sawyer Bogarty’s second hit of the day. With the bases loaded, Frangas dropped an RBI single into no-man’s land in left, stretching the lead.

Forcing Port Washington to call upon its bullpen, Plainview Old-Bethpage put the game on ice in the fifth, capitalizing on the Vikings loading the bases with a hit-by-pitch and two walks.

Ryan Healy delivered his second hit of the game, plating two with a single that split the Vikings’ middle infield. Frangas’ final act of the afternoon, his third hit, brought home the Hawks’ seventh run of the afternoon, all they would need to lock up the victory.

With the win, Plainview Old-Bethpage clinches a playoff berth and improves to 7-5 in conference play.
